I don't know if this is going to be a pointless exercise, but advice on running shoes...I keep meaning to go to one of those places with a treadmill and they can tell me whether I over-pronate or whatever but then I would feel kind of duty bound to buy a pair at probably twice the amount it would cost if I looked online or shopped around.
Is it easy to see whether someone over-pronates ?
My plan for 2009 is to do shorter distances and nothing above a half marathon - should I have one set of shoes for racing/intervals/tempo runs and another set for easy/longer runs ?
Finally, and depending on the above....anyone want to recommend some really good running shoes or places to get them ?

Steve,
Proper running trainers whatever distance you do are only good for you if they are the right ones for your feet and gait. What are excellent for someone else are Calf problems for you.
Runners edge in Southend are excellent,as are Original sports in Leigh .Both have treadmills and gait anaylisis and wont sell you the most expensive pair , if you dont need em.
Look at it this way even if you end up with a pair that costs £80 , you would only end up spending at least £40 on your first Physio session if a cheaper pair that arent right for you, cause you problems.Trainers are investments in your health! _________________ Jez

Quick Guide To Selecting Running Shoe Style
http://www.benfleetrunningclub.com/shoes.htm
As Jez says, treadmills and gait anaylisis are the only way to get the right fit and style of shoe. |

Well Mark I guess you do the most varied types of running of anyone I know so you need the right shoes for the right terrain....!
I just have one pair of running shoes that are looking a bit worn out from almost 9 months of running, and I only bought them because they were recommended in some forum I saw.
I wouldn't play tennis with any old racket, why do I run on any surface in the same running shoes that I randomly bought.....???
Original Sports here I come.......well, just after xmas anyway.... |

Steve,
I would recommend you going to the shops Jez mentioned. I took his advice and they sold me the right pair for me, and I was just beggining. The man in the shop even said...I could have sold you a more expensive pair, but I am not on commission and those are perfect for your feet.
However, once bought you can then buy your next pair(s) online. |

Job done.
Original Sports - helpful young chap took me through the basics and did the video analysis, heel strike pretty good so he says, very close to a 'neutral' shoe requirement but slight 'control' required - all very technical I'm sure.
All I could see is that I seem to be slightly off balance and leaning to one side....probably the treadmill.
Still, recommend the analysis.
I have nice new running shoes....watch me go now ! |

It's sometimes strange when doing exercises, that your body feedback doesn't match what is actually going on. When doing some of my balance and core strength work I feel (and can see in the mirror) as if I'm leaning to the left all the time, but I'm assured that I am actually upright and not wobbling or leaning!!
Enjoy your new shoes, Steve. Let's see those times come tumbling down!!!
(Which shoes did you get anyway?)

I got Asics GT 2140 with Solyte support stuff thingy.....very nice too.
Ran in them for the first time today - very good, shame about coughing my guts up for about 2 hours after, persistent cough that got worse after Witham. Still, there you go, must think about getting some trail shoes too then I can do some daft fell running with Mark or trail marathons with Ernie...
