My wife suffered her first running injury this morning.
Described it as a 'popping' feeling in the achilles/lower calf area - not majorly painful but certainly tender.
Any thoughts ?

Sorry to hear that Steve. Sounds like at the very least a calf strain. Obviously I would advise resting (from running) and icing for a few days and then try some easy calf stretches following a brisk walk. If straight leg stretches are OK proceed to bent leg stretches but if it hurts, STOP.
