Jon Steele ex para is on the right or left of me - this is us running into derrydarroch farm - we got lost 5 miles into the run:

Checking the flaming harvey map Jon and I managed to get lost at the 5 mile mark. The WHW sign is dropped low to the left. If you are stupid like us you can run on to Blainsfeld. There you can be even more stupid and knock up a farmer thinking it is 22.10 instead of 02.10 (and yes you only started the race at 01.00hrs)!

I wondered why the hell they were taking so long to come down the stairs. On the second ring a face appeared in the door glass...totally crosseyed. It is a picture I will treasure for ever. Jon and I both thought we could hear the sound of 'Duelling banjos' coming from the house....

I said to Jon Steele afterwards 'why didn't you remind me it was so late..'..he said that was the reason he stood well behind me....and Jon is an ex para the git!

We were directed back to the route but missed the path again and followed a WHW signpost. Unfortunately this was going the wrong way and only when I saw the sign about entering Mugdock park (which we had recently left) did we eventually find our way back. Again we phoned Ernie Jewson our support driver....it was some minutes before he finished laughing and could tell us what we had done......

Seeing Gavin the race sweeper was the nicest feeling. A really great guy who ran with us almost to Balhama before we came across a guy who eventually dropped out there and gavin had to remain with him.

The strategy of running slower into Balmaha then the 3:30 last year to test my knee was right. However, it meant we lost the pack I generally run with who guide me.

Still I thought that giving Ian Rae (who pipped me last year by 11 seconds) a 6 mile head start was very sporting....unlike his disgraceful sprint last year!

Dario's (the WHW race organisers) mobile call to me when we were at Balhama I will also treasure...'Mike where the F are you...' followed by uncontrolled laughter including people in the backround. At every checkpoint thereafter we experienced pointing, laughter and derision.....it was like being back at home or the 'caring club - my arse' again!

I'm glad that I just did the support vehicle part on Ernie's GUCR. If I had passed my car onto MM, I don't think we would have seen him again......

I knew I was doing the right thing when at the support stops, Ernie would get himself sorted and trot off, then MM would get himself ready but then had to ask me to point him in the right direction!!

You're still a star, MM. Despite the dodgy knee, dodgy navigation, dodgy sense of humour, dodgy ..........
