Next time when it hurts bore the end of a pair of scissors through the nail. SLOWLY til your through - youll know!!! Then you keep your toenails for painting!!!! Smile

She has documented the surgery and recovery using photographs. All of you aspiring 100 milers out there pay attention! If you visit Lisa's photo site you'll see lots of great ultrarunning photographs.Short of having the toenail surgery, the best remedy for black toenails is to have the right running shoes. I went four years without having two big toenails until I started running in Asics Tral Attacks almost a year ago. I completed several rugged trail runs, including Laurel Valley and the Cascade Crest 100 without having any toenail damage.

Have found it best to relieve the pressure ASAP - this works a treat.

Use the safety pin from your race number, if you can find a passing smoker, use their lighter to heat the pin. Then when nice and hot stick the pin right through the middle of the toenail. CARE!! If it's a bad one, the trajectory of the blood can be interesting!! You'll still be able to keep the nail as a souvenir but the pain goes straight away.
