just an apology on behalf of all the greasy-haired-student-geeks who keep infiltrating our forum.

I am doing my best to stop them registering, so please bear with me.

Mikey, you are correct - what a spineless bunch we have in the Club. It was made worse last night when the Race number arrived......I will now have to start touting at Springfield....

Mikey, I think the going rate for a Benfleet 15 race place is at least 3 marshalls to take your place isn't it ?

Of course the problem would be letting all the other marshals know that you’d covered your responsibilities.

It would only take one disgruntled marshal to ruin your day …. If not the rest of the season !

Would certainly suggest a mail shot to all our dedicated club members

A couple of explanatory chats at the start of club nights might also help
But you would have to brave all the verbal abuse that such an admission would provoke !!

If it was possible find out which club nights were being penciled in for such a vile occasion. A good money making scheme would be to set up a stall selling rotten eggs & fruit. Sure we could make a tidy sum for the club charity !!

I hadn't realised the significance of the Marshalling bit. I was suprised in 2005 and 2006 how few Club runners actually ran the Benfleet 15. I thought they must be scared of a distance greater than 5K or the mud or the cold or similar.

In fact it was the 3 line whip for marshalling (ie the commitment to the greater good of the Club rather than the disgraceful pursuit of individual self interest and personal development ) that was the reason....

Oh joy oh bliss.....I will just sit down and have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Damn.....no biscuits............

Probably why so many run the Marshals run on the Saturday

Fully supported, without the irritation of overtaking lesser runners from other clubs, and of course, giving the opportunity to cut up the course. That way our "Guests" on Sunday can get full value from their entry fee.

No wonder its so popular

Lack of runners on Sunday has more to do with the Clubs Reputation, both locally and nationally !

You'll find a clubs reputation lives and dies on its ability to stage well organized races, in our case the Hadleigh XC leg, and the Benfleet 15.

Next time you're standing at the start of a race with your benfleet vest on, and someone makes a comment on one of our races, what would you rather respond to ....

"What a crap race you put on "

or

" What a hard race you put on ..... But your marshals are brilliant "

I usually respond ....

"Thanks, I was marshalling in Leigh .... Do you know most of the Marshals run the race on the Saturday? "

Mikey, I now fully understand......and although it pains me to say it....agree with you.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have been dragged away for weekend by friends to a Mystery location birthday hotel I think I would have given up my race place and marshalled!!!!

I will ensure that I am available for marshalling at future events...where I will offer advice, taunts and verbal abuse to runners of any denomination....
