think i came 89th or 68th !depending on which way up the token was . fairly pleased with my run considering i hadnt run much in the last 2 weeks. was 8 seconds slower than i was at the langdon 5 6 weeks ago , considering this was much slower terrain its not too bad. 32:31 for this one for 4.4 miles.
what really suprised me was how fast i was on the downhills and turns compared to people around me. was a bit weird as i seemed to make up 4-5 places each time .guess its down to the fact ive run alot of competitive xc races in the past and doing a fair bit of training off road ???stranger still that ive never much liked downhills and was always similar to others around me before .

how did we do as a team , must have packed in several in the top 30 ?

Overall we came 2nd with five male runners in the top 30 & Karen winning the womens race, a superb effort.
Leading male was Graham (wont show my legs) Booty who came 9th, a solid strong performance good ol Mr Reliable.

There's a joke that goes something like;

Two guys are on safari & stumble across a hungry leopard hiding in the undergrowth. Terrified and frightened for his life one of the men cautiously reaches into his rucksack and pulls out his Nike's.

"Are you crazy man?" whispers his pal, "You can't out run a leopard!"

"I don't have to out run him," the man replies, "I only have to out run you!!!"

The moral... I expect us to do a little better than 2nd if we are running for our lives at Weald Park!

Aaahh, thanks cap'n. I was going to give you the rounds of the kitchen on here after (by your own high standards) your disappointing run. Not sure I can bring myself to do it after your kindly words. Hell, lets just give Dear a hard time instead. You missed the race for a kitten? A bleeding kitten? Ahh little tiddles. Was it all lovely and cute and cuddly? Geez mate, don't you go showing yer face in the Hoy for a couple of weeks.

Graham, your post makes very sad reading. We are learning one or two things about our new Captain that make me for one squirm. If any futher reports about cross dressing or biscuit stealing come my way I will be gutted.....which incidentally is how I believe Dom used to treat cats.....

was it not Abraham Lincoln who said

What is defeat? Nothing but education. Nothing but the first step to something better.

Okay guys hang your heads in shame as it was clearly us ladies carrying you again! Karl has pointed out that I look "in mean mood" in the photo taken by Dave Thompson's wife and I suggest you all look at that to see what sort of mean and aggressive mood you all need to be in at Hadleigh!

I'll be thinking of you as I get plastered on my office Christmas trip to Shannon...!!
Oops I'm setting myself up for some of the "Steve Dear abuse" from Graham...

Anyway reason for this post is despite our sad performance finishing a mere 2nd I did some great PR for us - buy today's Echo - full report on our campaign to retain our title.

There's a quote from our inspirational (if under-performing!) coach and every Benfleet scorer got a mention.

Go on - go out and buy it today !!

Debbie

Its a well held misconception about the XC scoring system that the Benfleet Ladies carry the team ( this is especially prominent in half of the membership ).

The reality is its our 4th and 5th male runners who make the greatest difference to the scoring.

Reason being, considerably more men run the races than women. It follows that a male runner 10% off the pace of the male winner, will be considerable further down the pack than a female runner 10% of the ladies time.

This combined with the fact that more men score than the women, means that the male runners have more effect on the overall score than the female.

It's clear that the mid pack ( relatively speaking ) male runners determine the final position for the club. That's why its so important we get as many of them out as possible.

Before I get too many abusive replies, I must point out this post isn't sexist ! Its just an analysis of the current scoring system.

Long may the women get the glory, and the Benfleet men determine the result.

What a relief Mikey. I won't have to run any more x-countries as my average and my considerably more than 10% slower than the winning lady performance won't make any difference!

Can you let Ian know please. I'm indebted to you Mikey !!

No need to give up

Why not just run them for the fun of it !!!!

I've only made the top 100 twice in 10 years.
Doesn’t stop me getting muddy ........... ( providing I show of course !! )

Debbie,

There seems to be an Echo on your posts, are you posting from the 'smallest room'?

Cheers,

John.

So, Mikey, using your theory then, if we had more men out (and I use the term loosely) on Sunday, like yourself and Mr Dear, we would have been 1st and not 2nd team???

On a serious note, and for the benefit of anyone new to the club, it is also worth mentioning that as many people should give the x-countries a go as possible, scoring or not, to push everyone else back a place!!!

And now I hang my head in shame and make my excuses for the 10th - I'm in Dublin, experiencing another form of Madness - 'One Step Beyond..................'
