Yes as said before Great effort from Benfleet RC.
Well done everybody that ran.
Steff - I bet your thinking what kind of time you can now get if the course was flat, you ran London in hot weather and got an amazing time and ran Halstead on a cold day but its damn hilly. You need to do a flat marathon on a cold day and see what you can do that in.
Still what is it now, two week rest and on to the next marathon |

Thanks Steve I had no idea I was doing it either until Friday the week before the race! In truth I was disappointed I hadn't pushed for a GFA time at London as it puts me under pressure next year so I had this mad idea if I rested as much as poss I might just recover enough to at least get 3:44 as I'd been training at a quicker pace pre-London. I wasn't sure I could do it until I tried a 15 miler the week before. I felt okay so I gave it a go. Wasn't to be though and in the end I was very pleased to get within 1 minute of my London time just 3 weeks later.
Sorry no mention for you in the Echo this time you'll just have to get out there in the Summer and win some trophies!! No pressure of course |

After the euphoria of yesterdays fine performances by many of the clubs runners most notably at the Halstead but also the Essex vets track champs , Essex pb5 & the bluebell 5.
There is tonight, a dank lurid smell that hangs around the club as it has emerged that 2 of the winning team Gold medalists at the marathon namely the blond Graham “ twinkle toes “ Booty and the dark tattoo covered Steffan “Angels” Cohen decided that not only was it time to show the club that their relationship has taken on a new kind of meaning by holding hands as they crossed the finishing line but during a drink and drug binge at a local bar they revealed to me that they share the same special nickname for each other but they were adamant that I was not to reveal it to anybody but seeing they publicly used it on this thread yesterday I must feel that as men’s club captain I am duty bound to reveal that their nickname is”club” for each other. You can read the thread at 9.10pm & 9.33pm yesterday yourselves & put 2 + 2 together and subsequent comments by the guys.
Later while the drugs were being passed around when asked about the race they said they were absolutely delighted with the Gold medals but would have preferred Pink ones with love hearts on.
After which they openly posed for pictures thankful that this long developing relationship had blossomed into something quite exciting and happy to share their hippy love with us all which will be available via the usual link providing proof that drugs & drink is the number one re-fuelling choice for this lovely couple. :love5: |

Prior to all this debacle (i.e top athletes in drunken, drug-filled night of debauchery,...", our PR lady did produce this less provocative report:
| Quote: | HALSTEAD MARATHON REPORT
It all started with Jez posting on the forum “Is there a team prize?” The gauntlet had been thrown down. Graham was up for it and it took Steffan all of 2 seconds to be persuaded to change his Halstead “training run” to flat out racing. Graham gave up his second sport drinking to show how serious he was. Then shock horror the instigator withdrew! How could you Jez?! However waiting in the wings was the Benfleet superstar of the x-countries Andy Morris in his first marathon. An Essex medal was a real possibility again.
So the day dawns perfect weather cool, drizzly, light winds. With Steff and Graham both repeating “the eye of the tiger” on numerous occasions before the race how could you fail to believe they would go out there and do anything other than run with all the guts in the world and fight for that medal.
Obviously as I was a long way behind the team I didn’t know until I finished how the boys had done. I swear I was happier than they were when they told me that Graham and Steff and finished together in 1:57:44 and Andy had run a first marathon in 3:07 and they’d bagged the team prize beating Springfield Striders.
I was then told that Sharon in her 2nd marathon had got her goal GFA time but not by a small margin she blitzed the time storming home in 3:37:17. More great news for Benfleet!
Then in came Phil, what a man running a marathon against Doctors orders suffering with a virus and on antibiotics and he still ran faster than he did on the course last year! The man is indestructible!
Highlight of the day for me though was Phil’s account of his minor altercation with Godfrey at mile 21. We all suffered our bad patches on the course (even the mighty Graham and Steff had theirs) and this point was Godfrey’s. In true Phil style he asked Godfrey if this was the right time to give him chapter and verse about his first sexual experience and Godfrey’s response was unrepeatable in polite company. Even funnier was Graham’s comment to Godfrey later that he had heard that he had suffered an attack of tourettes at mile 21 as he knew that such language would not have otherwise have come from such a gentleman. I gather the said parties are still on friendly terms however – thanks boys for the giggle you gave us!
The presentation of the team trophy and gold medals was priceless. Although we were a small band we made more noise than any other club as our boys picked up their prizes.
Surprises of the day were when the boys were celebrating their gold team medal it was announced that Graham had got the individual Essex Champs silver and Steff the bronze. However the presenter of the medals said the two could not really be split as they crossed the line holding hands at which point there were loud shouts from our esteemed webmaster about the boys’ sexual preferences. I understand this was a manly type of hand-holding - aloft in victory, so no further aspersions please.
However we were then approached by a member of Thrift Green who said that their runner had finished in 2:52 but he had probably forgotten to tick the Essex box. Graham with true magnanimity returned the silver to assurances that both Steff and Graham would receive a bronze each.
Second surprise was that I got the 45’s Vets gold. Unfortunately by the time it had been worked out everyone but me had left so the “presentation” was handing it over the table to me with myself expressing great surprise I’d got the gold and then being told “well a lot of people forget to tick the Essex box” - cheers that made it very special !! I am pleased to report for the honour of Benfleet however that after extensive research on the internet and on various other clubs’ websites as far as I can tell the gold was genuinely earned by me. Although there were a large number of lady entrants who were pretty fast they were either younger or were from non- Essex clubs.
Not a bad haul for Benfleet 6 medals – 3 team golds 1 individual gold and 2 individual bronzes.
Particular gratitude goes to the supporters who stood in the rain to cheer us on. Lee’s pics were terrific and the finish photos with the clock times were a really nice touch.
Some of us (Graham, Steff myself, Karl and Phil to name no names!) might be nutters for doing a second marathon in 3 weeks but none of us regretted it and we all did Benfleet proud.
I’m off for an ice bath now……one lump or two??

This is a flaming disgrace! As we know this is seen as a 'caring club (my arse), but these antics will only serve to humiliate us.
Snide comments from Springfield, Piss taking from Pitsea, Sarcasm from Southend, B*ll*cks from Basildon!
I sit here aghast, staring at an empty box of chocolate biscuits and and a pristine Benfleet 15 race number......I am for once lost for words....

I have the number of Jason Donovan's lawyer if anyone is interested..?
For the sake of even-handedness Ian Hislop is available to advise on defamation and how to survive without bankruptcy (a list of available defences can be supplied - for a small fee) who can also put you in touch with his heavily overworked legal team. :faroah:
Nice pic though don't you think Steve Dr? Captures our captain's best side as well.... |

To all those who want to see our Halstead golden boys in all their glory buy the Echo today!
Thanks especially to Lee for the great pic - it made it into the report.
Kev and Tony get a mention for their medals too although the paper split the piece I wrote just so they could use Mead and Steed for an alliterative title - sorry guys it wasn't my idea !! |

Sarah - Thats a gem of a photo! LOL!
Steve Dr - My people are already on the case, I'll be happy to forward you their number!
Deb - great report, made my year!
Steve Captain - Terrible report, to think he said "don't worry boys, this photo is for personal use only" still rings in my ears, as does "go on boys have another drink"! :puke: |

Lee you can have 50% of the royalties I receive from the Echo - 50% of zero is zero isn't it??
Surely you don't want money - it's the honour of the club that matters !!
Good luck at Edinburgh by the way have a great race and watch out for that haggis in the goody bag! |
