NEW FRONT WEB PAGE

Knowing that change is good, and that nothing stands still,

I give you a tester (subject to change, after comments) the all new front page of the website....if approved by all and sundry (oh, and JL)

Karl,

Well done, you are definitely improving with this webpage stuff - you'll make a code-monkey yet Wink.

Good stuff:

* The user won't need to scroll horizontally if they only have a display that can handle 800x600 resolution (common on a lot of laptops still).

* It has CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which should speed up the page/site Smile.

* It looks much more 'pro', I like the overlaid box design.

* The dissolving Benfleet logo animation is great.

The not so Good stuff:
    WARNING: Only for the Geeky

* The whole point of CSS is to reduce the amount of formatting in the coded page. Unfortunately the code in this page still has
formatting. Stuff like:
Code:
<BODY bgcolor=#adadad leftMargin=0 topMargin=0 marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" background="faq/new_faq/pics/brc_logo_lrg.gif" bgproperties="fixed">

(148 characters)

could be added to the 'body' section of the external CSS file like this:

Code:

background: #adadad url('../faq/new_faq/pics/brc_logo_lrg.gif') fixed;
    margin: 0;

(88 characters)

Then all you'd need in the main page is <body>. Not only that but if you include the same CSS file in all the other pages in the site they will all have the same 'body' formatting (as long as the <body> tag in all the pages only has <body> and not other formatting in it).

* Get rid of the <font> tags. You're using CSS now! Having <font> tags in the pages code only causes confusion (the browser will always use the formatting that is closest to the html page). That means any formatting in the CSS will be overridden by the <font> tag so making it a waste of time and bandwidth.

* As Lee said, especially with people using IE, the fonts could be a little too small and due to the use of pixels (px) as the scale in the CSS file they won't be able to increase the size using View > Text Size. Try using percentages as the scale (%) or even em's (em).

I realise that this may seem like a lot of work but getting a good CSS file sorted means that it can be used by every other page in the site. Once it's done you've sorted the format of the entire site and any new page that you add!

I'm sure the vizu_poll.swf feature is lovely however I didn't get to see it as the works firewall filters out any .swf file before the page displays. I'll check it out at home and let you know Wink

Overall...
I like it icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Very Happy" border="0" /> 10/10 for not resting on your laurels!

Cheers,

John.

Flaming hell John that was a reply and a half. The important issues are:

1. will the forum screen still need to be enlarged when opening - wasting a key stroke and hours lost from potential running time....?

2. will it make me use more electricity?

3. will I still be able to screen print the calendar and fix with elastic bands to my blackberry?

these are the real issues that must be addressed...

rgds

Mike

MM,

1. I suggest running on the spot while reading the forum.

2. When you get tired of running on the spot, simply attach a generator to Karl's turbo trainer cycle-thingy and plug the PC into the generator.

3. The Luddites among us salute you but I feel 'printing out' the diary is far too this century, simply scrawl the calendar info onto the nearest envelope. (Use a big enough envelope and you could use it as a case for the Blackberry saving an elastic band!)

Cheers,

John.

Hi Karl

Like the new web style –

Think it will work better on my steam powered Hockley PC

Also think your new Avatar is great

Slightly freaky …. Yet still recognizable

Mikey, good to have you back with us.

Sorry to hear about the small problem
(i.e Hockley running out of extension leads and double sockets and you and the whole village losing power for a fortnight - lucky you had that old watermill!)

How is the old Village, I hear you are going for the job of Witchfindergeneral ?

Cheers Karl

It's been a while since I've see anything worth committing on, but your Avatar does make me smile .

You must have an astonishingly high metabolic rate, to keep that slim, with your vast biscuit intake.

Thanks for your concern about my small problem, yes its all cleared up now.

What’s this about a power cut in Hockley though ?
Being a traditionalist, I never got connected.
Preferring candle light, and whiling away the long winter nights telling stories around the fire.

That reminds me must remember to cut an inch off Sundays Candle clock

Think you're find there’s no need for a witch catcher in Hockley, as they all emigrated to Canewdon in the mind 13th century

The pic was a self portrait, but I did struggle beacause I am not allowed anything sharp now.
It was the best I could do with the crayloa set I have.

1. don't take his photo.

Or

2. if they do happen to take one (by accident) they then delete them straight away.

Fair enough

If that’s the best you can do, then maybe you should put it a little further down the page.

Less chance of scaring off potential new members

Feel as I’m here, I must also complain about Steffan’s poor use of his spell checker

His spelling of “GIT” ………. ( ref: genius )

Was so far out its obviously been mistaken for a totally inappropriate word
