Lee,
Three sizes of pyramid spikes to have in your arsenal!
(not the football team before any of my smart alec clubmates have a dig!)
9 mm for hard (ish) ground, flat (ish) course.
1 2 mm for when its muddy and has uphills and downhills.
15 mm for when its total carnage! Mud to your ankles, slime, bogs, mental downhills, uphills that make you want to cry, etc!!!!!
Good to see you are going to have a crack at xc mate!

It's not so much the size, it's what you do with them....or is that just a myth?

wheres the best place to get spikes round here ?
further to what steff said i often prefered to run in 15s for most cross countrys though some of the september/october races id use shorter if the conditions suited. however on very frosty , tree stump lined or courses with lots of gravel/roads then maybe 9s. worst thing is having wearing long spikes over hard ground , not a nice feeling.
other things to bear in mind are things like wooden bridges where the longer spikes can mean you get stuck !
another thing , i just got some new spikes from sweatshop , 2 sets of twelve and 2 of 15s . whats strange is 1 of the 15s is what i remember most spikes to be like (with a sharp pointed tip) but the other 3 are much thincker and blunter at the top. is that normal these days ?
