The Main Event - London

For those of you guys visiting the expo over the next few days when u arrive & walk past the official Marathon merchandise stall facing it is a wallboard with the runners putting messages on it.
Well towards the end of the board these is a message, (well 2 actually it would have been more but the officials stopped me once a pikey always a ... ) to you runners from the Captain. don't worry about getting close to the board it's very visible from ten feet away Very Happy
And enjoy the shopping ... but most of all enjoy the
race & the experience .....
Karl C

Well Done Capt.

It is forecast warm and sunny intervals on Sunday (at the moment 21 deg and mostly sunny) which means you need to be fully hydrated before the race to stand any chance of having a good safe run.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday - sip water all day (at least 1.5L)
Concentrate every meal from now on around starcy complex carbohydrates. Cut down on tea, coffee and alcohol.

Set your alarm clocks for 5am Sunday so you don't miss the coach.
Make sure you have your chip, number and kit bag when you leave the house...

Very Happy
And enjoy the day everyone.
Jez

If your going to hand out advice Karl, make sure that you include trainers in the dont forget speech! icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Very Happy" border="0" />

THEY WILL NEED TWEAKING TO SHOW SOME REAL NAMES, FOR PEOPLE RUNNING INCOGNITO.

Very Happy
Sharon G

Well done to everyone who ran today. You were all amazing in that heat Smile
mArKw

Well done to all today, especially the PB folk and the first timers.

Thanks also to all the supporters who had their own battles getting to parts of the course because of the transport breakdowns.
Stevie

So pleased that you managed to get sub 3 hours Steff - very impressive.
Jez and Steve D what amazing times.
Debbie G, looking at your time, it looked like you had a very good run, glad you had a good run Smile

Well done everybody that ran today, it must have been very very tough running in that heat Cool
Steffan

Well done to all the Benfleet runners, supporters and mascots!
Great encouragement and banter took my mind off running all those miles! Got a nice tan too!

Had a fantastic day, how loud was the crowd at Tower bridge and the last two miles?!!!! Totaly amazing.

Roll on next year eh?!

Cheers Steve, I've just destroyed a Dominos pizza and I'm on my second cold one!!!
Very Happy
Lee O

Well what can i say? Well done Steff for your Sub 3, Great Stuff.

Talk about a Bloody Struggle ( Bloody Trains!! ) to Get to our 14/21 Mark NO Chance, so just got to 23 and watched you all Struggle through..

Had a Couple at The Hoy.

But i did get a nice tan!

My turn next at Edinburgh....

Have a Good Ice Bath Folks..

WELL DONE ALL Cool
Steve Des

Thanks to all our supporters today & especially all you guys at 21 mile 4 the noise u made as I approached Ian 4 that race saving last gel, I almost stopped to give a small speech i was so touched but decided on one last effort instead Very Happy
david thomson

well done everyone , rather you then me in that heat. to get close to a pb is some achievement but those who beat them , exceptional.

pretty sure i saw jez (behind liz mcolgan) and steve on the tv
debbie g

Thanks Steve. I was a bit disappointed to have trained so hard and ended up facing a scorching hot day that put paid to all hopes of a PB but in the heat it was the best I could do. Got some delightful sunburn and quads like concrete today!

Support from everyone from the club was amazing as ever thanks guys you were terrific all around the course. I even got a cheer from the Billericay Striders supporters (they must have forgiven us for the x-country League!) and huge shouts from Zena in the East Essex Tri camp.

Thanks to Sue Fuller's husband Richard for the nice chat on the Green Start pre-race - put aside all pre-race nerves. And I am pleased to report I did make a quicker start than Indiana Jones with the boulder!

Brilliant times Jez Dessie and Steff awesome running in that heat you did Benfleet proud.

My prize for outstanding performance has to go to Joe Elliott though. Only 20 years old only started running to do this marathon - his first ever. His estimated time on his form 4:30. Started out with Bobby's group ended up getting quicker and quicker and doing his last 4 club runs with me. His time - 3:40 ! Amazing! I must stop chosing training partners who get quicker than me!!!

ring any bells with anyone this morning...?

Well done to everyone, but especially all the first-timers
(think you picked the wrong year to start, but at least it gives you a time to beat next time..)

and all the PB's - superb achievements.
Anna Spanner

Brilliant!

Karl that video is excellent!!

i'm not doing too bad myself, just cant walk downstairs or bend my legs. For all the grief I give my nan, I'm so glad she lives with us, our house is full of geriatric aids including toilet frames, a specialist chair for the bathroom which doesnt alllow much bendage, a shower seat, an automatic recliner with foot elevator, and the mother of all aids.... The Stanna Stair Lift...I love old people.

Party round mine anyone?

Well done all, what an amazing day it was.
Anna xx
Karl C

Anna, well done. I have a lovely image of you whizzing up the Stannah Stair lift this morning...!!
Very Happy
Graham

Aye some great running. 10 min PB for Desi, who doesn't like the heat was superb. Jez, first man and first prize for mankiest toes. Stef, how buzzing was he after cracking 3 hours? Sally, who was sooo emotional after finishing her first 26.2 just made me smile. Brilliant stuff. Anna, running herself into the ground to break 5 hours. "Medic!!!" Ahh, I could go on and on.

And you supporters, truly fantastic. What a smashing day. See you all Tuesday to relive the pain.
Anna Spanner

there's more...

Karl
I've found two more geriatric aids which are just brilliant...the zimmer, which am having to fight with Nan for usage, and the electric bath lift which slowly lowers you by remote control into the bath...aaahhhh

and for the record, stair lifts do not whizz anywhere, they trundle
Karl C

Quote:
and for the record, stair lifts do not whizz anywhere, they trundle

bit like me then..?

Anna Spanner

aahhh, poor Karl
Lee O

Sad News Folks..A Runner Died today aged 22 after Yesterdays Marathon.
Lorri

Well done to all who ran yesterday and well done to all the supporters, it sounded like you had a dodgy time. Thanks Lee for being my food budding.

This was my first London and everthing went wrong from 8miles and by 9miles I had to stop and then the rest went down hill from there.
I have to say this was the worst race I ever did as I was in a bad way, even when I got to Tower Bridge I couldn't get excited and was gutted...
I won't give in though, I've got all the time in the world to give it another crack so next year I'll be back and I can assure you I'll will certainly get a PB, I couldn't possibly go any slower...he he. I couldn't believe it when a Rhino went pass me at 23miles, then I definatly knew it was all over, nevermind, thats life.

I'm well pleased for you Stef, you had a brilliant run, you well deserved it. A big thanks also goes to Lorraine for calming me down when I got in a state at 9miles, she stuck with me till Tower Bridge untill I made go on without me and she ended up with a good time for her first Marathon, well done girlie. Thanks Sally for looking after me in the last 3miles, it was a big help... I'll shut up now so you don't have read my dribble.

oh! by the way Anna you do make me laugh ya nutter

Can't wait to see you all at the club to hear all your stories
Graham

Hey Lorri chin up - as Jez pointed out you still beat Haile Gebreselassie. We all did. Not a bad scalp. Very Happy
erasedcitizen

Fantastic stuff people!! Many top athletes couldn't hack the heat so you did yourselves proud!!
I will be there next year....watching of course! I'm slightly put off by all this talk of stair lifts etc! Smile

Enjoy a well earned rest!

Stacey
Lee O

Lorri, No Worry about being food Buddy, just sorry could not get your Banana to you at 14m...
Still you did get it on coach!
debbie g

Don't worry Lorri be proud you finished and take heart from this - I did my 1st marathon in 5:38 and not only did a whole herd of rhinos pass me but a man carrying a full size canoe!

But revenge is sweet I got a 1hour 15 minute PB the next year, best PB in the club!!

Your time will come. Smile
debbie g

Hey Jez how did Mike the guy you were training get on?
Jez

He finally made it in 7 hours they had run out of water for the first 10 km so basically not well hydrated after that, but the heat took its toll as well. I think everyone can give themselves a huge pat on the back to finish in the conditions. I realised from about mile 8 that i wasnt going to get a pb but that finishing was the new goal!As they say there is always another marathon. Well done all and thanks to all the supporters who made the day a memorable one.
Steffan

Lorri,
you finished the marathon and got the medal.
That was one tough 26.2.
True grit mate.
Cool
Jez

Cheers David have just seen the recording and it was me behind liz mcolcogan, she left me trailing in her wake with about 800m to go.I could hear people shoutingfor Liz and my oxygen starved brain could nt work out why somebody could be so popular! I turned round, realised who it was and she sprinted for home................I only asked for an autograph!
mArKw

Lorri, you've got guts girl.

To keep going for 5 and a half hours in those conditions with many others struggling with their own battles around you, takes some doing.

Well done on finishing. Cool

Mark
Pammie

Well done everyone you should be all proud of yourself. Obviously not the best of conditions to run in so that makes it even more remarkable.
Esp Joe wow that is just an amazing time. Fab stuff.

Hope to be there next year.
mikemoreton

Jez, Many thanks for the training and listening to my moans every time we met. Seriously though, Jez deserves a medal for that alone!! I had a great day out and Benfleet Club can be proud. They are Superb!!
runningman

bounce mike, WELL DONE ..........all the best gary jackets.........
mikey

Lorri

Don't beat yourself up over your time ....
Think you might be missing the point slightly

Endurance events shouldn't be though of in terms of time
The're more about mentle strenght, and guts

Both of which you've got in spades

Save the pb's for lightweigh 10k's, and baske in the groly of completing one of the hardest marathons for years

This goes for all our other runners .... Absolutly supurb

Mikey
debbie g

Well done Mike on your first marathon and finishing in that heat ! Brilliant - be very proud of yourself Smile
mikemoreton

Debbie and Gary,

Not sure on who Debbie is and presume Gary to be the top bloke (IE: Nutter) who will be running the 200 miler?
Anyhow, many thanks for your support/help/replies. I really enjoyed the day out. Not too sure i should have gone to badminton to see my friends on Monday night as i was cajoled into playing for 20 minutes. Gawd, I'm easily led!!!

Best wishes

Mike
PS. Tuesday. Legs ached even more. Sorry i ignored you Jez, but you were right!! (again!!) Gonna rest them for the next 30 years now.....
well ok, maybe a week or two then.
pete the young one

well done everyone for running, what horrible horrible weather. everyone should be proud of themselves. congrats to all first timers, u picked a great race to be ur first.

my water pack split at 2 miles and made it look as though i'd wet myself, all the runners passing as i tried to get it off my back were laughing their heads off. i definitely felt a bit soggy in the shorts area for the next 3 or 4 miles. haha.

many thanks to all the Benfleet supporters as the cheers were heard even if they weren't acknowledged, sorry. and thanks again to the supporters and a few of my fellow runners who when they saw me hobbling along checked to see if i was alright. Lee cutting across the runners to see if i was alright did make me laugh a bit. i was a moody sod on sunday so sorry, really annoyed i've injured myself. glad today tho that i did finish otherwise think i would have hated myself for pulling out. even tho 2:33 to walk 6.2 miles is a personal worst for me, and the knee is giving me hell.

i can't complain really, shame to hear about that young lad yesterday morning, thats horrible.

again, congratulations to all, and see u soon.
Lorri

Thanks everyone for your kind words, I'm so lucky to have joined a lovely caring club. I am now looking forward to my next marathon.

hopefully I see you all down the pub tonight for a nice cold beer
Stevie

Lorri, your first London Marathon and you completed it in hot weather - thats some achievement, I did a half marathon last year in similar conditions and felt quite ill after so I'd hate to think how tough it must have been on Sunday.

Thats the attitude, thats London under your belt, plenty of other marathons around and no doubt your be back there again (hopefully on a cooler day) cheers
Karl C

some offical pics are starting to show on

www.marathonfoto.com

but I have pulled off the best of all of you and posted them into the results page next to your times.

Dear lorri

Please may I retract my earlier post

Thinking about it, it clearly wasn't the best photo to illistrate your marathon experiance.

My humbelest appologies

Along this line think I should cogratulate karl for his exelent photo additions to the results table

Particularly like the shot of sally storming down the finishing straight

Seriouly though, enjoy the photos, in years to come you're enjoy revisiting them

Mikey
mikemoreton

Well, talking of photos, I think by the time i finished (7hours) most had gone home. lol. I dont mind, I had a great day there and up to now have 19 photos on the 'official' site
Terry T

Bit late I know, but well done to every BRC runner, heroes all!
Now take a bow, a cold beer and a couple of weeks off!!!!
salute
Lorri

Thats ok Mickey I forgive you, your right though I do look really spaced out... lol

I have to say I'm more gutted about my photo's then I am about the bad time a had running... in one photo I have my head in my hands (so dramatic), I definatly won't be purchasing any of those photo's... lol

(no this is not a sympathy vote so no need to reply, you got that!)

I'll see you all next tues as I have not finished my drinking session, I'm still trying to drink Andy under the table but some how it's not working...
debbie g

Thanks Terry. Not sure that your advice is being heeded (ref Halstead marathon thread !!) at least in respect of the 2 weeks off ! Now cold beer on the other hand.....

However you'll be pleased to know I'm resting with a vengeance trying to regain full use of what I laughingly call legs.

Back to being my training buddy next year?? I promise to speed up by then !

I hear Graeme's "this is my last London" is being chucked aside again!!
Lee O

Just found out today a mate of mine at work, completed London, then collapsed on Train on the way home and came out of hospital yesterday...

Then Again he does Follow Spurs!!!!
mArKw

Common problem with Spurs supporters.

Post-marathon biscuit deficiency. He may now think his name is Karl

Hope he's OK now

Mark
Mike Mason

You had to mention my team and the biscuits...just as I was getting over things....

still well done to all for the London showing and I believe the person who achieved the most satisying and personal result from the day should be proud to have my donated ...unblemished and....clean...Benfleet 15 2007 race number...

Think your kind donation should go to Sally

You never know she might get all emotional again .... And need to blow her nose !!

Have put you down for marshalling duties on the Duathlon as requested

See you there

Mikey, can I suggest marshall position 14
(you know the one which is in the actual reservoir, about 200 yds in isn't it ?)

MIKE MASON - please remember your waders.
