Im entering the 5k on the day. If they have spaces!
|
Morgan

I'm also going to try and enter on the day to do the 5km. Failing that i'll do the 10

I fancy this one.Is it hard to get in on the day? That's the 5k i don't want to over do it.

Hi Stranger! How you doing Tony? Isn't this a bit long for you?? It has always been easy enough to enter on the day both 5 and 10k in the past but it is looking a bit more popular this year. Could be a very impressive 5k field with you, Mike B Keiron and Jez - if you can persuade Crispian that Felsted is a better option could have those 1st 4 places sown up! Go for it Tony!
|
Jez
|
No I have entered Felsted, but should be an interesting battle in the 5km for Benfleet.I look forward to seeing the results!

Hi Debbie. Me doing a 5k is a bit like you guys doing a 20mile run but i think i can manage it. As for the competition don't forget I'm an old boy!
so I'm really only out to win my age group (yer right!!!)

Well done to everybody who entered the 5k and 10k races today.
This was my first time out at the 5k event and on viewing the course in advance, I have to admit that I was quite relishing it. The sun shone down just before the start and it was beginning to get uncomfortably warm.
There was much banter on the startline as the race was delayed momentarily while a couple of runners retrned from a toilet break. But soon we were all off and Mike Briggs took a very early lead, pursued closely by the pack including Southend athlete Geroge Moxon and our own Tony Mead. I tried sitting back off the leading group but to my delight, was homing in on them just around the 2k marker.
I sat on Tony's shoulder for a short time but then had to go after the lead group. A group of 3 passed Mike around halfway and it appeared 4th would be contested between Mike, a Thurrock athlete and me. We then passed the 3k marker and it had seemed to go in a flash. Only 2k to go then.
However, this included the long drag up a slope past the Virgin Active Gym and it was here then I fell off the back of the Mike/Thurrock battle. The last k was spent desperately scrambling up the slopes and trying to hang on. However, I fell into the clutches of Tracey Ranson, the first lady who was creeping up unnoticed. She overtook me coming into the schooll for the last time. The finish was a lovely downhill down a field and I just managed to get enough momentum for a last push, and pass the tiring Ranson into the last corner. Mike finished 4th after a spurt of his own, Thurrock athelte 5th and me 6th.
When I checked with Mike afterwards, he had done 17.45 a PB time for him. Now I face a tantalising wait to see if I made it under 18 minutes, my target pre-race. My old PB was 18.12 set at Barking last year so I am fairly sure that has been broken.
Well done to all our athletes, and hope to see good 10k results!

Another excellent report keiron !
I myself sat on a road sign in Kenneth Road at about 10.18 waiting in anticipation of cheering on the brave benfleet runners....and I waited, and waited, and thought I'll wander down to where the marshalls are and see them coming along Hart Road.
'They've all gone mate'
'What....wasn't it supposed to start at 10.15 ?'
'Dunno ? Yeah, maybe they started earlier....erm, dunno....'
So anyway took a wander along to see how everyone got on and saw the start of the 10k. Pleasingly I got that exciting race feeling and wished i was doing it....however it was my birthday yesterday and i didn't get to bed till nearly 4 so i think i did well to give it a miss.
Waiting reports and results with interest....hope you all had good runs

I was sorry to miss supporting this race this year as I knew it would be a cracker. Keiron well done and those reporting skills are getting really tuned in now! But think it's Mike's turn for the limelight. Congratulations guys what a race. How did the old boy Tony do? :blackeye:

Really enjoyed todays race, felt up for it and was eager to put in a good performance. I was out of the blocks quickly which has seemed to become a trademark of mine. I found myself leading the race coming through 1k and thinking I should steady off a bit. I tried to pacemake the race, slowing down slowly hoping the opposition would be happy to sit behind me. Unfortunately this was not the case as 3 guys overtook me and I decided not to go with them as we came past the college. As I looked over my shoulder I lost another place and there was Keiron. At this point doubt set in. Did I go off too fast and had Keiron paced it just right? At the turn home from Kiln Road onto Rayleigh Road i tried to look for another gear and keep 4th place in sight as I was confident I could outkick him if I kept him within 20 metres or so. With 1k to go I looked back and had managed to shrug off Keiron and pushed hard for home. Coming round the field at the school with 200m to go I put the burners on and took 4th place with a gentlemanly 'well done mate' being received from the guy I overtook. 17:45 was my time, a 25 seconds PB from my Crown to Crown time on Wednesday. Really happy to grab another top 5 finish, another PB and hope my speed from these 5k's will hold me in good stead for the Brentwood 10k next weekend. Great Benfleet turnout, and typically great support, thanks guys.

Great reports guys and fantastic runs too :notworthy: and everybody else that took part. I had one person say to me on the start line that he couldnt believe how many Benfleet runners there were
Not the best performance by myself, felt like I had a fairly decent run, just 2 mins slower than I should have been but still it was good to be back racing again amd wearing the Benfleet vest

Its all ways so good to see so many Benfleet Athletes running. I think most people had good runs. I found it harder than it should have been. The first 1500m was okay( funny that) then i found my self working a lot harder than i had anticipated trying to keep up with keiron and mike.
I found the whole 5k very hard so when the school came in to view i was so pleased running down towards the field then i realised we had to run a lap of it i could have stopped there and then and walked in . I'm not to sure of my end position. Well done every one else.

This was my first TCC 10K......... foud it ridiculously hard and almost wanted to get injured just so I could stop running but being the stubborn girly I am, finished it but in a pants time!
Next time 90% of the club opt for one distance over another I am going to follow the herd rather than scoff and think I know better!!!!!
Well done everyone, great to see so many of us out xx

*phew* no one was twice as quick as me. Result!!
However, big hats off to Morgan. Just one thing though. How does he run a 10k at a quicker pace than a 5k?

Thank heavens for that - under 18 for the first time. What a weight that is off the shoulders. I am delighted with that. A 17-second PB in all, beating Barking Park 5k 2008.
Debbie - I saw the article last night for the first time and found it hilarious. Thank you very much for the write-up. The 'Crispianator' will be rushing to join us - if he sees that much publicity being extended to someone who has never broken 61 mins in his life, he will have visions of movie-star status with his times!
Mike is long overdue a similar write-up. He ran a great race here, setting a furious early pace, and then coming alive again at the end, seeing off his 2 direct rivals from a kilometre out. He must also be delighted with his 17.42, 3 seconds faster than he thought. Great to see a good set of times through the field in both races.

well done everyone good to see so many pbs on not the fastest course around. its much hillier than you think, very easy to get carried away going past seevic and having to slow down to go through the fence/gate thing aswell.
and sarah the first time i ran this i opted for the 10k but never again i know better now especially as im always training on it anyway.
mike was so fast hes completely blurred out in the pic i got (actually the whole field was there about 2 mins earlier than i was expecting and i hadnt set my camera up properly)

Thanks Karl
I have queried both mine and Morgans times as they both read 26 instead of 20, a quite obvious typo as shown by the finishing places

Well done everyone excellent results.
Ah Keiron it was my pleasure had a lot of fun with that report. When I took on the job of Press Officer Clive told me it used to be Press and PR but he didn't feel the PR bit applied anymore. Well he didn't bank on me!! As Graham Booty said about me - Max Clifford eat your heart out! Give me something to work with and I'll make a headline grabber out of it! I still think you are a star anyway Keiron and trust me Mike is getting a cracker of a report this week. And I am still suffering the moans of Ernie by making his "failure" into a 3/4 page feature!
Ladies did well on this race too - well done

Awesome, another PB and I didn't even have to run!? where did those 3 seconds come from? I'm not going to argue with the official timekeepers! Thanks Deb, it's great that the club is getting so many column inches, maybe we should get the articles scanned in and put somewhere on the site?
It sounds like we are gonna have quite a turnout for Brentwood 10k on Sunday, lets hope we can bring home some medals!

Well done all, some great performances. Thanks for the support on the course, not sure if a could muster anything cohearant by the time I passed David and Brian nearer the end, I suspect not!
Im well happy to have broken the 20 min barrier. I have to admit though that was cutting it a bit fine. I also gained 3 secs on my watch time but like you Mike I will take it. Still a big pb for me, 52secs of my previous from last year.
Will have to a have a go at the Little Havens 5k in gloucester park on Aug 9th, which will be on my Birthday so hope to celebrate with a quicker time on a flat course.
Finally Mr Groot, you surely dont think there were any typos do you?
Cheers

Cheers Mike for looking into it, I've also sent an e-mail but still waiting for a reply (well I did send it at 10pm...lol)
If the result is confirmed to be 20:38 (which was 3 seconds less than my watch) then I would have shaved off just over 5 minutes from the last time I ran this race. I also sneaked in another PB in the 10k too. I must be doing something right!
Well done to everyone who ran either race - a good day out!
