Mate I'm gutted for you. You can have sympathy by the wheelbarrow load. Hey, at least you and hubby can have a romantic weekend in Paris instead.

Ouch. Sounds nasty. Hope it repairs quickly. Try not to do too much and it'll be better before you know it.
Cheers,
John.

I really do feel for you Luce. Hope you are injury free soon.
However your efforts at the Ultra were not wasted I have finally taken heed of your words of wisdom at mile 14 and I have started taking gels on my long runs. Energy levels seem vastly improved and my dehydration problems seem to have gone too. So thanks for your advice.
Oh and can you tell Jez he hasn't got me into trouble. I couldn't figure it out at first but I think Gemma thought he was talking about Debbie Slack not me. I was supposed to be running on Wednesday! And I wasn't flying on my Thursday run either!

Debbie, gels are a must.....consider also for longer runs an electrolyte. May I recommend perpeteum. used to import from US but now hammer have a UK distributor.

the hammer gels are excellent but I understand you are enjoying the Carbooms.....
additionally Runningman advises that carrying a rolled up matress or Hilton club card can be very beneficial........

Actually I owe you thanks too Mike as I finally got around to trying the CarbBoom gel you gave to me several months ago just after the Ultra. I liked the taste and went out and bought 2 giant boxes with 44 gels in them!!
Still seem to manage to get gooey gel everywhere whilst trying to get it down!
Not sure I want to add something else as well so late in my marathon training but next time I start marathon training again I'll try that electrolyte. Thanks Mike.

Glad to hear you are finally giving the gels a go Debbie. Itll be a bit of trial and error the ones you get on best with. i personally find the sis ones are better on the stomach and go down quickly if having the consistency of ....... actually Id better not write that.
You need to ensure that you use enough of them early enough before your energy levels dip and your body switches its energy systems (bit technical but all to do with burning sugar/fat/protein and many combinations in between).
For a marathon at least every 6 miles. Jez goes for every 5. And you really have to make yourself. I am convinced I have done well in some really long triathlons purely through the ability to force myself to eat/drink and thats the difference. You really will benefit I promise.
On the injury front am gutted but not devastated. There are always people way worse off than me. But thats another story.......

Thanks Lucy. I've been taking them every 5 miles and it seems to help. I was taking the SIS energy/electrolyte drink on long runs before but if it's too concentrated it makes me feel sick so I don't think I'll get on with the SIS gels. I like the taste of CarbBoom even though they are a little thick. As you say it's trial and error.
I know what you are saying about your injury - Jez mentioned what put it into perspective for you. I agree I've been gutted with injury before but then something makes it just seem very trivial.
You'll be back at it soon and in the meantime please keep up the coaching tips, I'm listening!
