southend half marathondoing this as my 1st half marathon ,although i did an easy run with 4 k tempo over the distance last week id have prefered a few longer races first as well as some longer fast paced training. never even done a 10 mile so not ideally prepared but i wanted to get one under my belt as early as possible.
do you take on energy gels etc for this sort of race ? im looking at 1:22-1:25

Hi David, I'm not running in this one as I'm doing the Bluewater 10k on Sunday but it starts at 8:30 so hopefully i'll be able to scoot down for the end of the race. Looks like you've been running very well of late, quite suprised you're taking on the half marathon! Try and keep 19 July free for the Essex 10k champs. we should try to get a good strong team out to push for a medal. If we can get all of the clubs top runners there i'm sure we could do well. And although only top 3 would score more runners in top places would push other teams down. We have got alot of talent in 10k this year (Keiron, Stef etc.) i reckon it's just getting us all together to challenge the strength of the ladies!
I'm running the crown to crown this evening, any tips?

SouthendFor those of you who were not at the club last night, Southend sea front will be close on Sunday, one half uyp to Sea Life centre for a bikathon and the other half for the run. Best to approach Shoebury from the A.13 side. I'll be marshalling so good luck everybody no doubt youwill hear me.

what great planning bobby ! thanks for the info
mike i hadnt planned on doing the brentwood one but as you mentioned its the essex champs ive looked into it and i love that course ! when i was a cyclist i often raced on most of it theres a couple of nice hills in it for me.so yes hopefully ill be there
as for the crown to crown , had hoped to do it myself but legs were aching still yesterday so decided not to risk it but ran 10k fartleks this morning with no trouble at all !
try and start at the front as you should be in the top 10-15 depending on who turns up. but take it easy early on as its easy to get carried away in the 1st mile which is all downhill then you should have plenty left for the 2 hills in the middle ,the climb back to the start and the climb to the finnish.
good luck tonight and sunday.

Good luck Dave. Think you'll suprise yourself and be a bit quicker than 1:25. For a half I usually take a gel at 4 or 5miles, with plenty of sports drink pre race.

From what i recall of the 2007 London Marathon, Grahams pre race drink consisted of going out on the lash the night before. HERO

thanks graham ill try that out and see how it goes
im going for 1:22:42 based on my run at tilty which is 3:56 per km or 6:19 per mile. ill hopefully be quicker as i havent adjusted for the fact that tilty was a hilly one but ive never raced further than 10k so ill go at that pace and if i feel good than build it up in the last 4-5 miles.
oh and clive has got them to change part of the route , this is what i put on rw
| Quote: | | what we will now do is run to the sea life centre, back down the seafront and turn around at some point , go back to the sealife centre , back along the seafront, go up maplin way , church rd ,ness rd and then on to the finnish along the coastal path. |

Thanks to everyone for their great support today it was really appreciated.
Found it quite hard going today, I think it was a combination of the hot weather and the lack of training. Enjoyed the event though.
Well done to all the other Benfleet runners who run today, there was plenty of us there.

Big thanks to everyone for the support today.
My first Southend half and I really enjoyed it, although it was a little on the warm side for my liking!.
Well done to everyone who ran today.

Southend haLFAt the latest count we had 48 runners out today and considering the weather everybody did well. As soonas I get the official results I will let youknow but I believe we got two team trophies. Well done to all of you.

No Bobby it was one team trophy. Unfortunately there were quite a lot of mistakes in the results but Vanessa was 4th lady and 1st 35 vet. After my complaining to the poor Springfield lady who was given the trophy in error and to Dave Staines (Nes was too polite to ask for it back!) the trophy found its way to it's rightful owner Vanessa. The men got the 2nd team prize, Colin, Dave Thomson and Nick Rankin (squeezing poor Graham Crocket out of the team by a final sprint you wicked man Nick!). Well done to you all.
I will leave Ernie to post on the forum how I let the ladies team down by not trying today - right Ernie? :blackeye:
And Vic's comment to me at his marshalling station "stop waving and start running" was spot on! Sorry Benfleet. :cherry:
I couldn't let them give us the ladies 3rd team prize Bobby as I knew we hadn't won it, Springfield did, call it pay back for taking the vets trophy off the Springfield lady!

Bobby I think those that entered online have their club names missing. It is quite difficult to tell if the teams are anywhere near correct as a huge number of runner's club names are missing. When I get a quiet moment at work I'll do some more delving. From what I saw of the results from Dave Staines at the presentation the ladies teams were scored on overall positions not positions in the ladies race which might make a difference to the team positions too.
I'm on a tight deadline for my report so I'll have to go with what I have so far and I'll say 56 Benfleet runners took part.

Well done everyone on what was a BLOODY hot day ! and that was with the AIRCON on in the Patrol car ! good to catch up with VIC, BOBBY & BRIAN.......COULDNT believe how many runners fromthe club i didnt recognise ...

Just to say thanks for the excellent support from spectators & BRC personnel stewarding - as always a real pleasure to see you all!
Saw Bobby attending to a guy at about 10.5 miles - hope the magic sponge did it's stuff.
Like many others I found it very hot & took as long to the back 5.5 as it did to do the first 7.5!.
It was my first time on the new course & have to say i enjoyed it a lot! - It's nice to see other BRC runners progressing through the race . Really good last mile slow build to sudden loud cheering on the approach to the finish - just what i needed!.
Well done everyone - hope to see you all again & many more at the TCC 5k & 10k.

Karl do you have an email address to raise queries on the Southend half results?
My intitial investigation suggests the ladies team prizes are wrong and I think Benfleet ladies might have got in the top 3 after all. If I pass on what I have found out so far the organisers should be able to check. I am pretty sure Springfield ladies were first team but it was given to Ilford and I don't think they were in the top 3 at all.
The Echo will now be doing the Benfleet piece Friday so I'd like to get this sorted before then if poss.
I'll second that Terry nice to see your friendly wave across the course too

SouthendKarl what does the line through a runners name denote on the results. Is it that did not enter as club or that they are not paid up members.?

mixed feelings about my own run , never felt 100% but always felt i had plenty in reserve to push on .but i ran out of steam after about 9 miles and my legs completely went on what im calling the hill where we turned off the seafront and then just jogged home in the last mile or so. cant be too upset as ive got no where near the training under my belt for that distance and the wind and heat must have taken their tole.
got to say the support was fantastic especially that same section where there just seemed to be a wall of cheers, genuinely i had hairs standing up each time i passed through. and to all the other benfleet runners who cheered me on sorry the best i could do was nod or put my thumbs up you must have had an easier time than me

BOBBY, the line thro the names means they are not paid members.....

Well done to all Runners in such heat on Sunday.
Good Performances and hard work was put in by all Benfleet Runners.
Special Mention should be given to Debbie Gibbins for such great spirit and enthusiasm waving to the crowd as she sailed past.
We are all especially proud of her as she is such a good Ambassador for Benfleet.
Apparently she used Southend Half as training for Notting Hill Festival this August.
Dissapointed that I didn't see one bead of Sweat on Colin Rothwell as he came in........truly amazing style and performance.

This was my first race as a Benfleet Runner, and i couldn't believe the difference this made. The support was completely and utterly fantastic and really kept me going despite the heat. Thanks to everyone concerned - it was much appreciated!

Ernie has anyone ever told you that you are a bar steward? Or is that an Aussie git??
Heaven only knows why I still like you!!
Very fetching photo of Colin in the Echo today with no sign of sweat.
Funny I still managed to drum up a pretty good sweat from all my effort waving and cheering on the other runners, it's tiring putting in all that practice for Carnival whilst pretending to run a race :blackeye:
