Thanks for the support guys & girls. Sore but happy today. After a week of wholemeal pasta just gorged on fried stuff & cake. Fantastic.

As for the race, swim was great, great fun and pleased with the time. Alas it was followed by a terrible transition. Cramped up my right hamstring getting my wetsuit off. Thought I'd pulled it initially. Spent a couple of minutes massaging it out, but it hurt for the rest of the day. Not serious and in no way affected the rest of the race. Then went for a Forest Gump, unloaded...no loo roll. Bugger!! There were some soggy bits of cardboard roll lying in puddles of god knows what in the portaloo, so I had to gingerly tear them up and use them, very unpleasant and I'm sure you're all the happier for me sharing that with you.

Cycle was as tough as I expected, maybe worse. High winds didn't help. At least I didn't get a puncture, although I saw loads of people not so fortunate. Lee from East Essex Tri got three, all in the first lap. He had to spend 10 mins begging up a spare tube after he'd used up all his. Poor sod. Anyway I was very happy to see the back of the bike stage and pleased I'd gone under 6.5 hours. Bring on the run.

I pulled on my trusty running shoes, feeling confident and kicked off. Absolutely nothing happened. Hmmm. Now I'd done a fair bit of training on the bike, a good few hours every week but broken up into odds and sods, an hour before work, half hour home then turbo sessions in the evenings. Only two rides over 100 miles and really only one proper brick day, plus the half Iron man and I suddenly realised that my hopes for a decent run did in fact completely hinge on the bike and I hadn't done anywhere near enough long sessions. In my previous tri experiences I've usually been so far down the field after my relatively weak bike that on the run I just chase person after person down, no-one gets past me, my confidence soars and I run prety well. It wasn't going according to plan today. Things came together in fits and spurts, when a young girl raced past me my ego took a bit of a bruising and I tried holding on to her for a while but she eventually left me for dead. I even found myself walking for 50 yards or so, I was thinking I could probably walk the remaining 5 or 6 miles and still scrape in under 12 hours, but I managed to banish that idea. I was hoping for a 3:30 run and thought my time was much closer to 4, so when Stef told me my splits later in the day I was pleasantly suprised with just under 3:40. If I ever do another I now know what I need to work on. The sodding bike. And that's a very big if.

That's it. I may be tempted to bore everyone with a more detailed story for the club magazine. But not now. Roll on tomorrow. Lager lager lager.
Ernie

Certainly not boring Graham !
Great effort , fantastic result

enjoy the lager.

ps Some people try to visualise the finishing Line in these extreme events; would I be wrong in assuming that you visualise a nice cold pint instead ?
Stu

Well done Graham - very impressive.

Excellent stuff Graham. Mightily impressed.

What time in the Hoy?

Will you be at the club first? I dont mean for the run though.
Graham

Well the club is on the way to the pub for me so probably. Reckon 7:30 to 7:45. Cheers, G.
erasedcitizen

Well done Graham!! You smashed 12 hours! Hope you're enjoying the pub, silly question really.....!!
spokey42

Great result, Graham. You have been/are/always will be my hero and this was surely a Herculean effort. Welcome also to the world of 3hr 30min plus marathon running - hurts, doesn't it! Now you know what we lesser mortals have to go through. It's all too easy trotting around in sub-3hrs, the pain doesn't kick in until half-an-hour later! See you on the track - gosh! you're so versatile. Godfrey

There are a few excellent race reports on the TriTalk forum. Very inspiring. Still doesn't make me want to do one though.

Even if you aren't into tri's, they are worth reading just to show how much family/friend/club support means when things get tough.

Enjoy.......
