Helvellyn Triathlon

Has anybody done this or thought about doing it?

http://www.trihard.co.uk/Helvellyn/Helvellyn.htm

Maybe it will be the tri which would get me out for an open water swim.

Can't do it this September but I am tempted at doing the Recce weekend on the 22/23 of this month. Wouldn't do the swim though.....

Hi Mark

I'm interested !!!

Combining my two favorite things - Triathlon's & Mounting Running who could resist

Quite cheap too @ £38

I'll have a word with my training partner, could be we pencil it in for 2007, as part of our 2008 IM training !!

Kirkstone pass is seriously steep (even in a car), the pictures don't do it justice !!

A very hard but enjoyable day

Started with a 1 mile swim in Ulswater. water temp was 12,5 degs, though it felt a lot colder. I had a nightmare swim, and had to give myself some serious talking too's to get me round. Mark on the other hand, had an exelent swim, gliding past me half way round the course. Both of us exiting the water within 20 seconds of each other.

This ment we could have a chat in transition whilst we prepared for the nororious bike section. 38 miles of lakeland roads awaited us, with a crossing of Kirkstone pass to finish us off going up the road know as "The Struggle" out of Ambleside.

I got out of transition first, and made it half way up the first hill before Mark re-took the lead, for the rest of the ride we swopped first place. I'd catch Mark on the flats and downs, only for Mark to re-take the lead on the ups. That was until we hit the Struggle. Mark sliped past after the first 100 m and I didn't see him again for the rest of the ride.

The Struggle is about 300m of 1 in 4 road up to the top of Kirkstone Pass, what they don't mention is the 4 or 5 sections of 1 in 4,5 you have to go up to get there !! I gritted my teeth and grinded my way up. Looking over the edge at the top of Kirkstone Pass, I don't know how anyone made it up, but the support at the top was tremendous and I crawed over the top.
Mark wasn't quite so lucky, crapping up in the calf's on the last pitch, but he ran his bike to the top, getting a tremendous ovation.

We finished the bike section within a couple of minets of each other, so could have another chat in transition, before heading off to climb Helvellyn during the 8 mile fell run which finished off the race.

This time Mark was first out of transition, and I never saw him again. The weather wasn't to bad with misty clould covering the tops, but nice weather in the valleys. Mark made it up and back in under 2 hours, an exellent result. It took me 40 minuets longer, but it still has to class as my fastest ever accent of helvellyn, so I was pretty pleased.

We both finished in good spirits, and injury free.

I'd recomend this race to anyone

It's really hard, but worth it if you what to feel like you've realy achieved something when you cross the line

Well done guys. Great effort. Maybe we should organise a Benfleet Running Club hill-crawl (as opposed to a pub crawl) and try and run up all the worst hills in Essex/Britain ?

Simon - Porlock Hill ? - no problem - I p*ssed that in my car years ago.
