High Ongar 10kThink i was the lone Benfleet runner at this one.
Lovely little run, trail and concrete, well organised.
Quite hot, possibly very hot, in fact there have been some nice shady moments today but not when the race was on !
Did a personal worst of 48.53 or thereabouts, but my other two 10ks were at Chelmsford in November in much more sensible temperatures and I was in better shape. Should probably take off 20 seconds as it took me that long to pass the start - 427 runners someone was saying, and the start is very narrow, and despite the sign trying to separate the sub 40 minuters from the rest, clearly loads of slower people started at the front and slowed us all down to a procession.
Still, am I disappointed with a run over 4 minutes slower than my PB ?
Nope, as I have really felt as though I'm battling with a 'broken' body lately and done very little training of any quality - lost a bit of running heart and after 2k of today I really could have stopped, but instead I just kept it going and finished very strongly in the end. Overall quite positive mood which is what it's all about.
Good race, recommend anyone to do it next year

Well done Steve.
You turned up and raced in appalling conditions and stayed committed when your heart was not in it.
Little set-backs can be looked at as good character building stuff and can only help you the next time you race.

RacesSteve, listen to a man who knows. You could not get better advice.

Yes, thanks Ernie.
I was prouder with my efforts today than I have been with some of my recent runs even if they were faster, I think mainly because I could have given this race a miss knowing what time I would probably post, and then having got there I told myself to keep going when I was despondent and struggling to keep the average pace at sub 8.
Cheers !

Steve I have every sympathy with you having also run my worst training run since Halstead which I do not attribute to the heat but simply feeling tired and sluggish. Like you I could easily have aborted my run today but I carried on and was glad I did in the end even though my overall pace was lousy. Sometimes running is about digging in and staying the course even though you aren't recording times you know you are capable of.
As regards the race I think this race is a cracker. I ran it last year, it was the Essex Champs and we had only 5 Benfleet runners there, all ladies and we cleaned up all the medals! I found it a fast course though sections were a little rough underfoot on the old airfield and I recorded a pretty good time, as did the other 4 ladies we all got sub 43 minute times. I vowed I would do it again but this year didn't fit in with my training so I had to pass it up. I highly recommend it though as a fast course and traffic free.

The organisers have struggled with software problems to provide the results of this fine race, although they have them and I have confirmation that my time was 48.55, finishing 103rd out of 311, so that was nice.
Following this race I didn't run for almost 3 weeks, spending considerably more time on the tennis court, although it was nice to do a couple of training runs recently and hopefully enthusiasm will return.
I have been watching the weekly results with interest and well done everyone on your recent runs....
