HALSTEAD MARATHON

Halstead Marathon 13th May

Phil
Karl
...?
mikemoreton

Would love to, but its my wedding anniversary. (Thank you God)

Not sure on doing Full Marathons after my London First. Would like to now keep fit and lose weight, so any ideas on that would be welcome
Steffan

Entering on the day!
Graham

Me too!!
mArKw

Nutters, all of yer. Haven't you done enough marathons over the past couple of weeks.

I think the London sunshine fried your brains Smile
Jez

Is there a team prize? bandhead
Graham

Why you interested?? I was going to use it as a hard training run for impending IronMan, but if we have a half decent team out then might have to take it seriously...and we know what happened last time we went for a team prize!
debbie g

Yes come on boys think of that Essex medal get out there and run your butts off for Benfleet ! I need some publicity to get on the radio.

And I can tell you I share Mark's view - even if Jackie Shanks has been secretly training and enters on the day or Luce is back to full fitness and intends to run or Julia P also has a fit or madness and turns up for a second marathon in 3 weeks I WILL NOT BE THERE to make up a ladies team!!!!

I'll be thinking of you with my feet up and glass of wine.

drunken
Jez

Possibly, have just checked last years results and gold was won with first 3 under 3 hours 10 mins.So it is definately achievable, just as long as its not too hot! Will let you know, got european long course end of june so might not give me enoughtime to recover.
Graham

Oooh, how exciting. Go on Jez, you could take it easy and still breeze round in a cracking time. Just had a butchers and there is no County Championship entries allowed on the day though, so we need to enter in advance. Let us know and I'll wean myself back off the booze for a couple of weeks!!
Jez

With dedication like that, how can I say no! What is closing date for entries? sign6
mikey

Whilst you’re all on-line

Remember to leave 27th May free for the club Duathlon

Should be fully recovered by then !!

Marathon’s are ok …. But its multi-discipline events which are the true test

Will be interesting to see who really are the “fast boys” & Girls

( hoping you’re be fit Lucy ) …. Determined to beat you on the bike leg this year !!
Jez

Dont worry mike I will be there to defend my title but if I have done the Halsted, I hope that is taken into account when the handicapping is worked out!
mikey

Was thinking about getting my other brother to take part this year

That way we should get a “Jordan Boys” clean sweep in the handicap

But if he can’t make it, there’s a third spot going begging
( If the price is right )

What about you Graham ? Proven Ironman training event
Graham

Jez - Stef, get yer names down boys. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/eve...info.asp?sp=&v=1&EN=34987
Jez

Boys, you need to find another runner I am not going to enter I wont recover in time. I am sure capt Dessie is equally mad/stupid /insane as to give it a go! Will do the bluebell 5 and then Baddow and take all the abuse you can give!! notworthy
Steffan

Thanks Jez, I can run at a sensible pace now!

bom
mArKw

And your defination of sensible is........?

icon_biggrin
Stevie

Knowing Steff, he will just jog round at sub 7 pace compress
Graham

Steff me old mucker, think Andy who trains with us club nights is running this as his first 26.2 miler. OK, without Jez anchoring the team medal chances might have receded a bit but we can still put in a good club performance. Get off the juice and back in training damn your eyes!!!
Steffan

Ok mate, off the juice as of last night, I'll try to keep up with ya!!!
Steffan

Also, have you seen the medal for this year?
My word, this has got to be done just to get one of them!
bounce
Steve Des

Jez, I am mad I will give u that but insane well thats just mad ...

Now boys, if this race had a half decent t-shirt then maybe, no seriously I can't see any appeal in this race especially a few weeks after Ldn. Anyway my right calf hasn't been right since that hot day & I'm not sure when it will be ok 2 run on it, even Baddow looks doubtful.. So Gra & Stef no pressure just use it as a good training run
Steffan

Get well soon Steve, hope your calf isn't causing you too much grief.
david thomson

after looking at your winning margin from last year i think its the rest of us that need the handicapping unless there were punctures slowing the others down ?

as for you lot doing another marathon i dont know whether to take my hat of to you or call for a doctor , flippin nutters
Lee O

Hope to be there to get in some pics.....
Lucycat

Honestly you lot. Have you ever heard of training periodisation. No not a girl thing cyclops_ani but a way of training that recognises you build towards a race, peak for a race do well then urgh recover..... then start again??????

tis why runners rarely do well at Baddow after a marathon 4 weeks before or get injured.

Sorry Mike - flower cant do the duathlon as a) you WOULD beat me as I havent been doing any bike miles or proper training and also b) Im off to the brecons that weekend to bag a few peaks!
mikey

Lucy I'm gutted

Have been planning my bike peak all year to coincide with our annual showdown
( not that you would realize I've been trying to beat you for years )

Can't believe you're going rambling instead !!

Will Jez be joining you, or will I still have someone to chase on the day ?

On the bright side, only 24 months through my current 3 year training plan, aiming to be considerably stronger this time next year ( you better start getting those bike miles in )

Mikey xx
Lucycat

Mike - unfortunately for Jez when Lucy decides she fancies a trip away mountain bagging with Paddy Jez has to come too so she can scare him silly ..... So we are both away, although Jez of runs 100s of miles a week and never bloody gets injured (not that I get a teensy weency bit jealous) fame has been training for the european long course and so I suspect might have the edge for the biking.

Ill go do a 10 T/T in a few weeks and then you can see that you would have won. cheers
Lee O

Well done all today, sent my pics to Karl to post...Got bloody soaked..

Think we got Boys Team Gold??

Well Done Sharon And Debbie...And All The Boys

WELL DONE BENFLEET BOYS AND GIRLS , BLOODY LUCKY IRONS
david thomson

well done you nutters , not so well done the hammers.
debbie g

I don't know who was more proud me or the boys themselves! Absolutely awesome performace guys already sent my report to BBC Essex so listen out. Will be doing one for the Echo too.

Just to clarify apparently a runner from Thrift Green did 2:51 so he got the silver after all and Graham gave the silver back so Graham and Steff share the bronze (they'll both get medals) as they crossed the the line together.

Sharon did an amazing 3:37 and is in London next year. Huge congrats to you.

And Andy has a GFA time too in his first marathon. Well done!

I was chuffed to bits with my gold (I don't care if they made a mistake on mine - I'm keeping it!).

Thank you Lee (who saw me when I nearly pulled out!) and for looking after my Stewart and showing him where to support from. He was grateful. Support was great as always thanks so much.

Well done to everyone and don't believe me when I say I won't do a race on the forum again!!

Karl C

well done Lee (+boys) and Stew for their support.

Oh, and my only claim to fame today was that this was my 10th marathon !

Graham

Fanks Ernie! Great support for BRC, Lee you were great. Alas Edinburgh is a slightly longer drive so not sure i can return the favour. What a great day of sport. Kev & Tony got bronze & silver in their 1500 as well...more Benfleet medals. West Ham done the double over the champs, didn't even begrudge Stef celebrating Spurs getting into Europe. I am more than a little pissed..tho haven't been sick like Stef..tee hee. I love my club. drunken drunken drunken drunken drunken drunken

Thanks to everyone for the support yesterday, was a really good day.

Well done to the mens team and Deb for their medals and everyone else from Benfleet for being so nice and supportive- makes you proud to wear a Benfleet Vest cheese

P.s unfortunatly my photos are not as good as Lee's. My son took about 30 in total and only 3 of those resembled Benfleet runners- got some lovely pics of strangers and the countryside though!!
Jez

Well done everyone some superb efforts yesterday.Good day for marathon running.

Graham, Steff and Andy told you the Gold was on! Excellent.

Mikey, I am away for the duathlon so wont be there as previously stated.Off to the Brecons for some light hill work.
mikey

Well done to everyone

As always doing Benfleet proud

Great result guys ....
Graham, quite a string of marathon times you've accumulated in the last month or so

Remember Lucy's words of wisdom ( ref resting )
Want you on top form for the Half Ironman

Had to add my congrats. Benfleet is certainly a club to be reckoned with!
Looks like 2007 could be a very good year for us, keep up the good work ladies and gents.

Lee - well done on you and your families endurance support (and great pics thumbleft )

Cheers,

John.
mikey

Jez

Not to worry, Lucy has alredy told me she's taking you rambling that weekend !!

Looks like the title race is wide open this year, with both You , Lucy, and Tony Mead away in the hills !!

Steff, have you sorted out a bike yet .... Could be your year

Mikey
Steffan

Mikey, If I do it on my bmx, i want that taken into account!
Graham

I've just been looking at the times, missed a pb by 1 second!! Ha! If I hadn't been trying to hold Stef's sweaty hand as we ran in (found a photo on the official site and we dont look as gay as I'd feared) or if Godfrey hadn't insisted on starting in front of me......
Lee O

Look what I just Found.....Our 3 Boys
Tony Mead

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE. WHAT A WEEKEND FOR BRC.
I VERY PROUD OF YOU ALL. bounce
david thomson

thats a massive trophy , shame it says copyright protected on it bigsmurf
Stevie

Yes as said before Great effort from Benfleet RC.
Well done everybody that ran.

Steff - I bet your thinking what kind of time you can now get if the course was flat, you ran London in hot weather and got an amazing time and ran Halstead on a cold day but its damn hilly. You need to do a flat marathon on a cold day and see what you can do that in.
Still what is it now, two week rest and on to the next marathon bom
debbie g

Hi Tony. Congratulations on your medal. Buy the Echo this week I've added a bit about you and Kev in my Halstead piece. Hopefully they'll print it Benfleet deserves it! 8 medals for us this weekend can't be bad!!
Stevie

Yeah Nice one Tony, I hope you have mentioned me aswell Debbie - lol
Well Done yesterday Debbie, I had no idea you were doing this one aswell Smile
debbie g

Thanks Steve I had no idea I was doing it either until Friday the week before the race! In truth I was disappointed I hadn't pushed for a GFA time at London as it puts me under pressure next year so I had this mad idea if I rested as much as poss I might just recover enough to at least get 3:44 as I'd been training at a quicker pace pre-London. I wasn't sure I could do it until I tried a 15 miler the week before. I felt okay so I gave it a go. Wasn't to be though and in the end I was very pleased to get within 1 minute of my London time just 3 weeks later.

Sorry no mention for you in the Echo this time you'll just have to get out there in the Summer and win some trophies!! No pressure of course Wink
Steve Des

After the euphoria of yesterdays fine performances by many of the clubs runners most notably at the Halstead but also the Essex vets track champs , Essex pb5 & the bluebell 5.
There is tonight, a dank lurid smell that hangs around the club as it has emerged that 2 of the winning team Gold medalists at the marathon namely the blond Graham “ twinkle toes “ Booty and the dark tattoo covered Steffan “Angels” Cohen decided that not only was it time to show the club that their relationship has taken on a new kind of meaning by holding hands as they crossed the finishing line but during a drink and drug binge at a local bar they revealed to me that they share the same special nickname for each other but they were adamant that I was not to reveal it to anybody but seeing they publicly used it on this thread yesterday I must feel that as men’s club captain I am duty bound to reveal that their nickname is”club” for each other. You can read the thread at 9.10pm & 9.33pm yesterday yourselves & put 2 + 2 together and subsequent comments by the guys.
Later while the drugs were being passed around when asked about the race they said they were absolutely delighted with the Gold medals but would have preferred Pink ones with love hearts on. flower
After which they openly posed for pictures thankful that this long developing relationship had blossomed into something quite exciting and happy to share their hippy love with us all which will be available via the usual link providing proof that drugs & drink is the number one re-fuelling choice for this lovely couple. love5
Steffan

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I love you captain! Hurry up and get well soon.
Graham

How funny!!!!

Get well & your ass back up that club ASAP cap'n.
Steve Des

Oh no you can't love me as well .
Ur a nice bloke and all that & I like running with you & Graham but I don't think I'm ready for that kinda of relationship just yet .
Anyway I have a calf injury so I won't be able to do myself justice joker
Steffan

Calfs, cows...... whatever next!!

Prior to all this debacle (i.e top athletes in drunken, drug-filled night of debauchery,...", our PR lady did produce this less provocative report:

Quote:
HALSTEAD MARATHON REPORT

It all started with Jez posting on the forum “Is there a team prize?” The gauntlet had been thrown down. Graham was up for it and it took Steffan all of 2 seconds to be persuaded to change his Halstead “training run” to flat out racing. Graham gave up his second sport drinking to show how serious he was. Then shock horror the instigator withdrew! How could you Jez?! However waiting in the wings was the Benfleet superstar of the x-countries Andy Morris in his first marathon. An Essex medal was a real possibility again.

So the day dawns perfect weather cool, drizzly, light winds. With Steff and Graham both repeating “the eye of the tiger” on numerous occasions before the race how could you fail to believe they would go out there and do anything other than run with all the guts in the world and fight for that medal.

Obviously as I was a long way behind the team I didn’t know until I finished how the boys had done. I swear I was happier than they were when they told me that Graham and Steff and finished together in 1:57:44 and Andy had run a first marathon in 3:07 and they’d bagged the team prize beating Springfield Striders.

I was then told that Sharon in her 2nd marathon had got her goal GFA time but not by a small margin she blitzed the time storming home in 3:37:17. More great news for Benfleet!

Then in came Phil, what a man running a marathon against Doctors orders suffering with a virus and on antibiotics and he still ran faster than he did on the course last year! The man is indestructible!

Highlight of the day for me though was Phil’s account of his minor altercation with Godfrey at mile 21. We all suffered our bad patches on the course (even the mighty Graham and Steff had theirs) and this point was Godfrey’s. In true Phil style he asked Godfrey if this was the right time to give him chapter and verse about his first sexual experience and Godfrey’s response was unrepeatable in polite company. Even funnier was Graham’s comment to Godfrey later that he had heard that he had suffered an attack of tourettes at mile 21 as he knew that such language would not have otherwise have come from such a gentleman. I gather the said parties are still on friendly terms however – thanks boys for the giggle you gave us!

The presentation of the team trophy and gold medals was priceless. Although we were a small band we made more noise than any other club as our boys picked up their prizes.

Surprises of the day were when the boys were celebrating their gold team medal it was announced that Graham had got the individual Essex Champs silver and Steff the bronze. However the presenter of the medals said the two could not really be split as they crossed the line holding hands at which point there were loud shouts from our esteemed webmaster about the boys’ sexual preferences. I understand this was a manly type of hand-holding - aloft in victory, so no further aspersions please.

However we were then approached by a member of Thrift Green who said that their runner had finished in 2:52 but he had probably forgotten to tick the Essex box. Graham with true magnanimity returned the silver to assurances that both Steff and Graham would receive a bronze each.

Second surprise was that I got the 45’s Vets gold. Unfortunately by the time it had been worked out everyone but me had left so the “presentation” was handing it over the table to me with myself expressing great surprise I’d got the gold and then being told “well a lot of people forget to tick the Essex box” - cheers that made it very special !! I am pleased to report for the honour of Benfleet however that after extensive research on the internet and on various other clubs’ websites as far as I can tell the gold was genuinely earned by me. Although there were a large number of lady entrants who were pretty fast they were either younger or were from non- Essex clubs.

Not a bad haul for Benfleet 6 medals – 3 team golds 1 individual gold and 2 individual bronzes.

Particular gratitude goes to the supporters who stood in the rain to cheer us on. Lee’s pics were terrific and the finish photos with the clock times were a really nice touch.

Some of us (Graham, Steff myself, Karl and Phil to name no names!) might be nutters for doing a second marathon in 3 weeks but none of us regretted it and we all did Benfleet proud.

I’m off for an ice bath now……one lump or two??

Debbie Gibbins
debbie g

It's okay guys I know when I'm beaten. What sort of PR lady misses out on the scoop of the century?? I hand it to you Karl and Dessie the PR job is yours. As they say even negative publicity is good publicity, right Graham and Steff??
Mike Mason

This is a flaming disgrace! As we know this is seen as a 'caring club (my arse), but these antics will only serve to humiliate us.

Snide comments from Springfield, Piss taking from Pitsea, Sarcasm from Southend, B*ll*cks from Basildon!

I sit here aghast, staring at an empty box of chocolate biscuits and and a pristine Benfleet 15 race number......I am for once lost for words....

rgds

Mike
Stress Head

Steff & Graham, thought you deserved a gander at this picture of our illustrious captain moving in for the kill on Steve D. Seems to be an underlying theme emerging with our faster male athletes...........ah!!!!!!

ZIZOU

Sarah; what faith you must have in your legal team to post something so slanderous!

The number for "Libel-lawyers-for-you" anyone?
debbie g

I have the number of Jason Donovan's lawyer if anyone is interested..?

For the sake of even-handedness Ian Hislop is available to advise on defamation and how to survive without bankruptcy (a list of available defences can be supplied - for a small fee) who can also put you in touch with his heavily overworked legal team. faroah

Nice pic though don't you think Steve Dr? Captures our captain's best side as well.... compress
debbie g

To all those who want to see our Halstead golden boys in all their glory buy the Echo today!

Thanks especially to Lee for the great pic - it made it into the report.

Kev and Tony get a mention for their medals too although the paper split the piece I wrote just so they could use Mead and Steed for an alliterative title - sorry guys it wasn't my idea !!
Steffan

Sarah - Thats a gem of a photo! LOL!

Steve Dr - My people are already on the case, I'll be happy to forward you their number!

Deb - great report, made my year!

Steve Captain - Terrible report, to think he said "don't worry boys, this photo is for personal use only" still rings in my ears, as does "go on boys have another drink"! puke
Lee O

Any Royalties from my pic Deb???
Graham

Can't fit it any longer boys....http://www.londonfrontrunners.org/home.htm
Graham

Ooops. Fight it I meant. Brain not functioning after Mead & Stead destroyed me on the track this morning. They can't half shift for a couple of old duffers!! Think I'll stick to the longer stuff.
debbie g

Lee you can have 50% of the royalties I receive from the Echo - 50% of zero is zero isn't it??

Surely you don't want money - it's the honour of the club that matters !!

Good luck at Edinburgh by the way have a great race and watch out for that haggis in the goody bag!
