Essex Way Relay - 2008 and beyond.Dear All,
Just to let you know that we've decided this will be the last year we (Thurrock Nomads) organise the Essex Way Relay. Frankly it's now just too big for us and needs more 'professional' organisation by those with more resources available. We're not getting any younger either!
We stepped in to save the Relay in 2000 when the then organiser, John Good, pulled out at late notice and assumed that it would fold. That year 3 Clubs (6 teams) participated. We then developed it in a 'frill free' way using trail running ideas and attitudes. The size it has become could not have been envisaged in our wildest dreams. Probably the success is linked to the explosion in trail running in Essex during the same period.
I've sent this communication to those Clubs and individuals (sorry if anyone's been inadvertently left out) most closely associated with the event and Essex trail running in recent years. We trust that a large club, or a group of clubs/individuals, will take over the organisation & probably conduct a 'root and branch' overhaul, so to speak...This early notice is to provide plenty of time for thought and action.
Though we won't be organisers any longer we'll still be pleased to help and advise when, and if, requested. We'll also be continuing with the voluntary work we do for ECC on the Essex Way - particularly concerning signing and badging.
In this year - the 20th of the Relay and our swansong - there'll just be a few changes:
Ceri & I will help with the recording this year to see if we can assist in reducing the gremlins re scoring of the last 2 years - mainly caused by the current entry size
Consequently we won't be providing the 'unofficial' drink stations which we have normally done. It will be more important than ever for clubs to look after their runners and help out needy others as well
Sarah Colbert is donating a trophy in memory of Andy who was a great champion of the Relay and off-road running. Andy was always very prominent and enthusiastic in helping (without having to be asked) on the day. The new trophy will be for V45+ teams (male, female or mixed) as Andy was in this age group not quite making the big 50 before his untimely demise.
Over to you!
