Edinburgh MarathonFour runners from Benfleet Running club. Two of us doing the full marathon and two participating in the Hairy Haggis relay. It was a very hot day but the scenery is superb. A very flat course which usually has other challenges like rain and wind but I was probably the last to suspect a heatwave in my home town!
The number of runners has increased from 6000 2 years ago to 17500. While it was nice to have more company there must have been an error in the planning as there were no drinks left between 15 and 22 miles. It was incredible to see so many people walking and scavaging discarded bottles at around 20 miles. Difficult to admit being a Scot but the organisation was poor this year particularly having experienced Paris and London. I'll put it down to the extraordinary heat and the increased numbers. The decision not to have an Expo this year I feel was also an error.
Nevertheless I finished in 4:44 which completes my personal challenge of 5 marathons in 8 weeks.
Paris 4:46
Bungay 4:43
London 4:29
Halstead 4:45
Edinburgh 4:44
Next stop Berlin with a target of 4:20. A wee bit of work to do.

Well done Bob that is a fantastic achievement, 5 marathons in 8 weeks is amazing mate.
Sub 4:30 in London and the rest within minutes of each other, 15 weeks until Berlin so with a little speed training between now and then you will crack 4:20 no problem.
First effort this weekend at The Tilty Hilly
Cheers

Bob well done that is really excellent running as I've said before I look sane by comparison to you! I have written a small feature about your marathons for the Echo which should appear in Friday's edition. I have sent a photo of you too which I hope they will print.
Awesome Bob enjoy a rest now and leave Tilty Hilly to Andy!!

I thought I was on my own until I met Rory at the finish, he did around 5 hours. I didn't catch his second name. The two relay runners were a man and a lady who normally run with Bobby. The man was called Bob but I didn't get the lady's name as we only talked briefly at the boarding gate.
Debbie
you may have created a media beast by sending my picture to the Echo as I am to marathon running what Susan Boyle is to being a pop star pin up! The only difference is that she is talented.
I can't wait to get back to regular club nights with fresh legs.
See you all soon.

Thanks Debbie!
My children are made up that their dad is breaking records in the Athletics column of the Echo! Great picture aswell as I can see the Eiffel tower on the medal. I am so glad you didn't submit a picture of my unique running style usually with a grimace and my eyes shut!
I am finally listening to some good advice and resting my legs for two weeks. The column in the echo made me smile about the beautiful places and situations that I have found myself in over the past 8 weeks! I have had a great time and feel lucky to have been able to run with so many inspiring people at these events and especially down at the club.

Oh it was my pleasure Bob and I think I should thank you for the wonderful quotes on the forum - I loved the Beaujolais one! It made it easy to do a really nice piece on your epic achievement.
Glad you are listening to good advice and resting. As they say do as I say not as I do - from the lady who started running 3 days after Halstead! But then I had run a mere 2 marathons not 5!!
2 weeks rest as a minimum Bob you'll come back flying with the strength this will have given you.
Well done again Bob it's an outstanding achievement
