Chicago marathon 2007While some of us will be running a 10k in Southend on Sunday, we have a few club mates heading to Chicago for 26.2 miles.
Best of luck to all of them.
I found a link to watch it online if there is no tv coverage.

I heard it was a scorcher out there! Well done captain
|
Coach
|
Indeed it was a scorcher and they stopped timing after 4 hours 30 mins and were telling the runners to walk and not run. Dessie suffered with a bad knee but was determined still to finish. Debbie finished too and wasn't going to let the heat, nor the organisers wishes for everyone to stop and walk, prevent her from getting under 4 hours 30. Well done to you both, true Benfleet spirit, look forward to seeing the tans when you return

I can confirm that ... i was there last week..Chicago is in the middle of a heat wave it was 85 degrees last weekend !!! Well done to everyone !!

OH PLEASE....we always thought it, but now we have proof..
Dessie is a big girl.......no offence.
And to think, Big Phil was only 1/2 hr behind him at the Loch Ness.

Hard luck with the weather Capn. Still, at least you got to top up your permatan and saved yourself a fake bake session.
Well done debs, beat the 4:30 cut. News reports sound horrendous.
And you both didn't die.

Hey well done yesterday, it did sound to be an awful day weather-wise
and Graham looking on the positive side thats good

Well done you two, god knows how how you managed to run in that heat. I take my hat of to you both... I'll stick to Luton nice and cold

Masses of respect to Dessie and Deb for finishing that 26.2.
Just heard the news that one 35 year old police officer taking part has died and there are several in critical condition caused by the heat in Chicago.
Thoughts go out to the family of that runner.

Well done for running a Marathon in that heat
|
Steve Des
|
Hi guys thanks for all those kind words but karl & mark were right. My (un)motivational speeches which we all know are hot air caused the heatwave in chicago & i ran like a girl, in fact for 14 miles I jogged & walked like a girl as my left knee just went.
I vow never to speak about the race in public my knee & quads have never known such pain. But a great course none the less.
|
Karl C
|
Well done Steve, you are still my hero
|
Mike Mason
|
and mine.
ps I wish I could run as well as some of the girls.............in fact Karl is an inspiration to me......
|
Bet you cant guess who??
|
Chicago Endurathon!!In view of the frequent references to Dessie's slower-than-expected marathon time being due to his running like a girl, I am making a stand for all the girls at Benfleet .
If anyone can come up with an alternative description to someone running less than their best, please feel free to share it with the rest of us (words such as girl, girlie, woman, lady are all prohibited) - I know it is hard for you men but you will need to dig deep and be inventive!!!
Also, if anyone wants the real reason for Dessie's 3:29 marathon time, I suspect that it is because he can't go for more than two blocks without stopping at a Starbucks (his addiction was worse than mine for a KFC). Fortunately there was only one KFC on the course but as a Bargain Bucket takes longer to eat than it does to drink a Mocha Latte (or whatever it was he kept ordering) that also explains my less than acceptable 4:19 finishing time.
Rest assured the heat had nothing to do with it - us Benfleet runners are made of tougher stuff!!!
|
Karl C
|
yes, apologies for casting a slurr on the female gender.
What about
"he ran like a springfield strider..."
or
"he ran like asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping."
|
Steffan
|
Oh Karl, can of worms with the first reference mate! Haha!
Well done Deb.
Ran like a girl does not cut it in this club as all the males would be getting close to national standard times like Stacey!
I'll take running like a girl, even with a girl would be fine!
|
Bet you cant guess who??
|
Well you certainly couldn't say "he ran like a girl with heavy shopping" if you wanted to imply slow because us girls can still run like the wind with untold amounts of shopping!!! It is one of the undisputed things left in this world that we can do better than men !!
PS love the Springfield Strider one !!!!
|
Bet you cant guess who??
|
PSS Forgot to say: thanks Steff for your "Well Dones".
Unfortunately you run too fast for most girls to keep up with you. When you run more like an Asmatic Ant than Atom Ant you might find more girls run with you !!!
PSSS Just realised you are probably too young to know who Atom Ant is but trust me it was a compliment
|
mikemoreton
|
Was he any relation to Adam Ant?
|
Karl C
|
Who, Steffan ??
are you sure..?
| Quote: | | Prince Charming, Prince Charming, |

Bet you cant guess who??
|
Well he does look more like Adam Ant than Atom Ant who, if my memory serves me correct (which it rarely does these days), looked like a little ant with a bomb as a head!!!!
|
Steffan
|
LOL!
I remember atom ant, quality cartoon superhero! Haha!
Adam ant! I guess my makeup wearing secret is out then!!!!
But only at weekends!
|
Steffan
|
P.s - Thanks Karl for spelling my name correctly! Mike, please take note!
