Bizzare Phenomenon

Out on my first 'Bat Run' for this winter season last night out on the downs. It was freezing cold. My hands, feet and body were all suffering the cold. Running along the bottom of the downs just off the path from the 3-way post, the air was suddenly warm and smelt of wood burning. It lasted a few seconds and then disappeared again. There was no sign of burning around me. No sign of fires, alive or dead.

This phenomenon occured another four or five times on my way back to the car at the station, but only at the bottom of the downs, not higher up on the slopes.

The only thing I can thinkk of is that the cold air was holding the smokey hot air from one of the houseboat on the creek, down onto the ground. But wouldn't hot air rise faster in cold air?

* Bat runs are off-road runs at night using headtorches.

WEIRD. or maybe the ghost of an old sea dog coming back to haunt you.

Funny, I was talking to Uncle Ernie last night about organising a "bat run".
Maybe 5.30pm ish on a Friday, starting Hockley Woods...???

If it becomes a regular thing we could also take in the Hadleigh Downs..??

what do we think - only 5 miles or so ???

Have headtorch, will travel. cyclops_ani

Would be good practice for the Kent Moonlight Challenge 23rd Feb 08.

I checked. Godfrey was nowhere to be seen or heard. Even though he does sometimes smell of burnt wood.

Friday's are getting busy for me now, what with Kev's sessions and other stuff. But if it's just a 5 mile or up to an hour run, I could do the bat run, and then do the core session after.

hasn't got to be a Friday....
Mike Mason

does it have to be at night though?

Mark, spooky incident....reminds me of the time w
Karl C

MM, I do think it needs to be dark....
mikemoreton

Gents,
As I live in Hockley, I wouldnt mind running for an hour one evening. Bear in mind I am slower than you though, so I dont mind if you politely say 'no'

MM2, it would be a pleasure to run with a fellow Hockleyite....if I live in Hockley, obviously !

So, Friday night is out. As is Thursday's (club run)

What about a later Tuesday instead of a quality session one week ?

Or 6.30pm on a Wednesday..??
mikemoreton

Suits me. Do I need a torch?

I should be at the club tomorrow too. Would be nice to run with someone who is quicker and can drag me along.

Are you all mad?!!! Hasn't anyone seen the Blair witch project.....!!

MM2 - I have some spare head torches. If you are lucky I may put some batteries in. Hopefully with more rain the woods will become a lovely quagmire....
mikemoreton

MM1,

That would be great, let me know what batteries you need.

Was thinking of taking the dog, but not a good idea...

1, Its Dark.
2, shes a black labrador.
3, she gets in the way when its light.

Hrmmm, quagmire, dog to trip you up.........Hockley Grim springs to mind

MM2
Mike Mason

MM2 - I could bring my manly Yorkie....he likes dressing up as you can see.....
mikemoreton

Poor sod will be crushed if i stepped on him in the dark.
Karl C

no worries MM2, as long as the dog is OK you can squash MM1.
mikemoreton

Mutual respect and love eh?

By the way, are there many going to the run tonight? Its p***ing down here, and i'm a fine weather runner. (or Wuss)

MM2

I would love to, but I am at the Junior Club from 6-7pm.
And that is indoors, in the warm.

Well you could run with your eyes shut. If you do, I would recommend having a comfortable friend of the right height to lean against. (I have experience)

Karl

Due to my full training week, it doesn't really matter which night we run as I usually have some form of training/event/other stuff every day/night. so if you choose a suitable night, I'll try and fit in.

Cheers

Any night cept Monday or Friday will suit me. However, dont have to work round slow little me

Ernie

MM2 if Karl is taking you out into the Woods at night I would suggest you bring along a large ball of string.

Tie one end to Gate in Car Park to allow yourself to get back safely.

I remember well the last time Karl took a group into the woods.....

ps watch out for the wildlife, especially the nocturnal creatures crawling about in the car park at night.
mikemoreton

Had a fantastic run through Hockley woods with Ernie and MM1,

Only got a little bit lost

Really enjoyed it though.

Where was Karl?

At night it's easy, follow the lights to Rayleigh, we have electricity and street lights compress

If you want a slow run, get Mike to sort out when he takes me into the woods for a run, I only go there during the day though. blackeye
