Abingdon Marathon 2009

Would you believe it, this one is on 18 October 2009 and as of 30 April was full ! Oh I said I wasn't going to do a marathon this year, and then vaguely talked about doing Abingdon, thinking I had plenty of time to get entered....but no, can't do it now unless someone drops out and wants to exchange with me, there is no waiting list !

Looks like from Benfleet we have Sarah G, Jo B, Louisa L, Peter W, Andy F, Graeme M and Susanne B reckons she got in online via Runnersworld...probably one of the last.

If any of you get to say August/September and really don't fancy it, can you consider exchanging your place to me (I will pay for the privilege of course) ? Thanks !

Most annoying thing is that around 30% of the entrants wont turn up on the day, as per last year.
Pammie

Wow
Heard it had closed the other day. Did not enter so can't help you out there.
30% as much as that. That is quite a number
Steffan

Realy wanted to run this marathon, I can't believe it sold out so early!
I have found an official waiting list though but chances are I won't get offered a number as I'm quite a way down the list!
Worth a shot though eh JBD?

Cheers Steffan, I was aware of that topic on Runners World but the list was long already when I saw it....i was only going to do it as a favour to Susanne who helped me prepare for this one last year, so I'm not pulling out all the stops the do it (don't tell her that), however if a Benfleet runner drops out I'll grab that place if offered .

Good luck, like I say last year around 30% didn't turn up on the day !
Steffan

Well, as of this evening, there are just four people above me on the waiting list!
I'd better start getting some longer runs in!!

Graham

Yayy, that's the spirit Steffan. Thought you'd disappeared buddy. Hope you get it coz Louisa has kindly transferred her place to me. We both got unfinished business after missing Halstead.
Steffan

Very, very true G!
(and my terrible Southend 1/2)! shhhhhh!!!
Andy F

Nice one guys, are you staying Sunday for Post race refreshments?
Graham

If you let me know the details I might. I did mail you the other week......
Andy F

I have sent you the details, can you send them on to Steff.
pete the young one

Steffan

I'm in!
Post race drink? Oh go on then, twist my arm!!!

Andy F

Nice one mate, are you staying up there for the weekend?
Steffan

The way i've been running lately, I'll still be on the course the next day!

If I have no lift home or G gets me drinking if i've driven myself, i will  stay over mate!

Still alive then bro? Aside from one stupid run I have completely neglected any long stuff for months so my speed endurance is rubbish and this is going to be a long day at the office. I am not expecting anything special. Spring board for london aye!

I'm travelling up on Sat night pikey stylee in the camper and staying at a campsite about 1 mile from the start. Room in the upstairs bedroom if you want it. Porridge included. Will hang around a bit post race to watch the girls & boys finish but have to get back for work early Mon so alas wont be staying over to get smashed. There you go, travel and accomodation if you want it buddy.
Steffan

That would be fantastic mate, many thanks. I'll get the beers in!!!
I'm massively undertrained for this so treating it as a very long Sunday training run and not a race!!!
Looking forward to it, kickstart for London 2010 definately!!
cheers
pete the young one

space going

I know its a bit late but i've only just made the decision to pull out. training has gone to pot a bit this year so Abingdon is off the cards.

If you want my place let me know asap as i need to let them know hopefully before the end of this month.
boabmac1

If nobody else has expressed an interest Pete then i would be more than happy to take it off your hands.  It will keep me motivated for Luton in December.

Bob you're a legend!!!

pete the young one

Excellent Bob. if you want to send me a private message, i need your address, UKA number (i think) and date of birth, then i can send them an email to swap the place to you.

are you going to drive up on the morning? or do you plan on staying over? just asking because i haven't actually cancelled my accommodation yet and was wondering if i can swap that as well. i'll see you tomorrow at Canvey if you're there.

cheers

Another great Benfleet excursion. Some great performances but once again the day belonged to the girls. Jo, celebrating her birthday and Sarah both nailed big PB's, smashed good for age qualification and both looked great crossing the finishing line. Superb running from the two of them. Andy finshed just ahead of Sarah and Graeme just ahead of Jo, I know they were both well happy about that but they knocked their nuts off to do it and I have say boys, I think your days are numbered!

Bob continued his relentless marathon assault on 2009, finishing another 26.2 in well under 5 hours. Hewn from Scottish Highland boulders that man. If only the Scottish football team was made of the same stuff.

Alan, in one of his final excursions in a Billericay vest before seeing the light and joining BRC had a good day. Not far behind me at the halfway point he stuggled with a mechanical problem in the latter stages, but still finished well inside his target time of 3:10.

Stef was going well, but was crippled with some bad blisters over the final third. More long runs required to toughen his feet up.

I was pleased with my time. Struggling with a cold, only the fact the Louisa had kindly donated her number to me and Stef was relying on me for transport and overnight accomodation in the camper meant I felt obliged to toe the start line, tissues and all, otherwise I think I would have wussed out. Lovely course, definitely got a faster time due there and I will be certainly revisiting. Just wish I was still there now celebrating Jo's birthday with the rest of the gang. Sure they'll have far better stories to post tomorrow.

Great times, well done all.

Well done to the girls for their GFA times - brilliant stuff.

REAlLY pleased that Sarah went for it and  got an excellent time. Yep i will be doing that one again.(think) THANKS FOR ALL THE BIRTHDAY WISHES X cheers
Steffan

Great weekend all around!
Highlight of the whole race was watching Jo and Sarah cross the line with massive pb's and good for age times in the bag and the smiles that followed! Well done both of ya!

Thanks too both Ians and Lorri for the support, your cheers helped me forget about the pain!

Great running also from Andy, Graeme and Alan, quality times.

Bob is a true legend, how many marathons have you done this year mate?
You'll be the first person I know in the 100 club I'm shure!

Graham, thankyou for the hospitality, the transport and lodgings, the pasta and the laughs! More road trips definately! Made up for you getting that time and a GFA. Amazing running that quick with a stinking cold, I'm betting you get the elite time at London 2010!

Abingdon is a great course, I'm going back there next year (and putting the training in)! Pb potential!! Had a good run up to 16 miles, I was on track for a sub 3 untill the hotspot that I noticed on my foot after about 9 miles would no longer be ignored and reared it's ugly head as a couple of whopping blisters! This required self surgery when I got home (very messy) taught me a lesson but I enjoyed every minute of that 26.2!

Heres the mile splits.... made me laugh when I got home!

Well done to all who ran at Abingdon.  I thought this was a great race, good atmosphere, plenty support and perfect weather.

I seem to have been the only one to have run below par but part of the blame has to go to the fact I spent all day Saturday lifting a tiled floor.(Trying to earn brownie points with the wife for another day away!) I felt great until around 10 miles and then struggled. Lapped by the race leader who was at 20 miles in 2:03.

Thanks for all the support from Graham Booty, Steffan, Jo, Sarah, Andy, Graeme, the two Ians and Lorri.  Lorri you are a real treasure. You made me feel like Alan Wells on that last 200m sprint finish.

Incredible runs from you all and I just want the rest of the club to know how much it means to be cheered home by the real stars who finished two hours earlier!  Great support and thats what makes this club so good.

Ps. Tried to finish the kitchen floor tonight but managed to let my hammer slip onto the oven door only to watch in horror as it shattered the glass! That went down well with her indoors...
Andy F

Have to echo what's already been said, great weekend and good company. The course is definately a potential PB course, very flat and it is great to finish on the track. Have to say that the deviation after coming into the sports center entrance was a little cruel, just as you thought/hoped you were nearly there, left turn around the outside of the grounds.
Thanks for the great support out on the course from Lorri, the Ian's and Alan's family.

Well done to all that ran, great times from all. Most notable performances from the Girls and also a great time from Graham running that time after a week with MAN FLU!!!
I salute you, most would still be in hospital.

Talking of Hospital Bob, give up that DIY lark mate otherwise that is where you will end up. Either a self inflicted injury or Alison wrapping the remains of the oven door around your head.

Roll on next year, we will definately be returning. Sounds like another Benfleet weekender could be in the making.
mArKw

Well done to all.

Impressed with those consistent times there Steff, before it went pear-shaped (or even blister shaped)!!!

Well done all, especially Jo and Sarah - well jealous of those times !

Yes it's nice to have lots of support on the course - did this one on my blooming own last year, not bitter....!
Jo .B.

Thanks Steve. Where have you been hiding? Are you coming back to the club? Smile
JBD

Hi Jo, my running discipline is shot to bits, I have to get back to the club ! Maybe not this week, but very soon. Good to see you running well   Very Happy
