16th March - Hadleigh Downs

what time are the marshalls needed on site?
JBD

To be fair, Stevie is "Over by the Raceboard" kind of elite as opposed to "Corridor" elite.....still trying to work out how the pecking order works regarding "Behind the Desk" standing and whether this is ahead of the "Leaning on the Desk at the Front" crew.

No matter how much (or indeed whether) I improve as a runner, I pledge to remain true to my roots as a "Keeping Quiet and Standing Right at the Back" kind of guy....

I might be able to do the Cross Country this weekend, Coach will no doubt tell me to marshall...... geek
mikey

Think you're find the standing behind the desk crew, tend to be poor time keepers, or just plain anti social ( or is it true and we do really smell ?? )

The standing at the back crowd is definatly the place to be

Not to elite ....
Not to close to the board
But not standing just inside the door either !!!!

Having said that …
If Kirste’s in …. Leaning on the front desk is definatly the place to be
Karl C

Another thread sucessfully hijacked !

oh, and Clive is still looking for marshalls.

Apologies sir !

It's looking like quite a wet and therefore muddy one, and since I have no spikes I will offer to marshall when I go along tonight.

Just to repeat and get thread back on track - marshalls required !

Kirste huh Mikey ?  bounce

Sorry.....marshalls.......marshalls.....marshalls.....

Right on to the next Thread to hijack now - lol  evil4
JBD

I came, I saw, I marshalled, I slipped a lot, I got wet, most enjoyable !

Looked like a tough one in muddy conditions - good idea to make it impossible to avoid running straight through a puddle at around half way we thought.....Peter can take the credit/blame for that guys.

Bit of sneaky info for you.....the guy who came second had to stop and walk up that fairly steep hill where I was marshalling...hope that makes you feel better, though the two leaders were way ahead and I gather this 'walker' had done the Grizzly last week so we'll let him off...Smile

Anyway...well done, I am definitely going to get some spikes ready for next year, I want to experience that grim faced 'why do i do this' look I saw so much of at the bottom of that hill...good work  cheers
Stevie

Steve, we can swap if you like, ill have your Marshall position and you can borrow my muddy spikes next year - lol  compress

Thanks for the support at the bottom of that hill, I was feeling pretty tired as you saw, and thanks to all the other Marshalls that supported us on the way round  thumbright

Was away at the weekend

really disgusted by those that didnt bother to turn up to help out yesterday , theres 200 members i think but we ran out of marshalls , peter watson for instance had to cover a large area on his own.jnr wanted to run but couldnt.my wife would have taken my place if i was able to run. its probably always the dedicated few that turn out to do this but what happens if they cant do it ?

come on people if theres no marshalls there are no races

in total i was away from home for 3.5 hours and that was including training on my bike before and after.
mArKw

Doesn't matter as a win's a win and all the teams had one or two good games in the tournament at some point.

Just like I had third place and M40 in the orange catergory in the orienteering yesterday.  There may have been only 14 finishers and at one point I took 12 minutes to go between 2 controls 200 metres away (think MM1 was sitting on my shoulder telling me to get lost), but I take the end result with boths hands......
mikey

Enough about the rugby

Don’t know what’s worse

The fact that we gifted you the first win
Our appalling display against Scotland

Or having to put up with welsh taunts for the next 12 months !!!

Let’s face it, in rugby terms there’s nothing worse than the stereotypical Welshman with a chip on his / her shoulder

Back to the Cross Country

What No Results !!!

Cheers...I thought with that position being the furthest from the start, you must be about half way when you got to that point but I gather it might have been around two thirds or more - should have found out on the walk there I suppose ! Trouble is it was a straight walk there, I didn't know the course at all and we had no idea whether you started on time.

Explains why you all looked so tired by then and why Kev expleted at me when I suggested "dunno, about halfway mate".......very very funny, but sorry Kev ! colors

Totally agree.  This was the fourth time I've run our XC over the past few years and it was obvious that this year that there were fewer marshals on the run around.  The quality of marshalling was once again excellent, just that the quantity wasn't there.

I know that weather may not have been great and it was a little muddy in places but I don't see that as an excuse for not supportting our club for just a few hours.

Mark

Think we need to motivate the members more

Probably spent a little to much time telling people it would be “nice” if they marshaled
Instead of explaining how important it was to the club that they put something back

Have to admit I was gutted to miss this year (due to family commitments ), as I find marshalling at our cross country one of the best days out of the year.

Think if more people realized how much fun it is, and its not a chore at all, we would be over subscribed next year

Wot ..... Still No Results !!!
Karl C

I agree Mikey (yes, I know)

I was busy with family committments aswell this year, but haven't missed one for a while. Never felt the need to run (never asked - far too slow) but it is a great laugh seeing other people suffer.

I like the statement on EETC membership form-
Quote:
"I understand that I am requesting full membership of the East Essex Triathlon Club. I understand that the club is committed to promoting the sport of Triathlon and part of this commitment includes the running of four or more events annually. I agree that I will participate in marshalling in at least one of these events."

We only have two official marhsalling duty requirements. B15, and our XC.

It seems this is only a problem when the "regular, long-standing" marhshalls have other committments.

In the words of that great poet, and football genius:

C'mon, let's be 'aving you !

I would echo that marshalling was quite good fun for a start, so perhaps it needs to be promoted as a social event rather than a duty.

It's the same scenario at my tennis club - 95% of people come along and play leaving the rest of us to be captains, social organisers, cleaning up crew etc etc.

We need to do our fair share.....I did the Ultra this year, I'm already thinking that I'll drive next year if needed....makes sense ?
mikemoreton

I did the Ultra last year, but couldnt offer my services for this year due to family commitments, which was also the reason for not marshalling.
david thomson

i keep seeing people mention the ultra , do you mean the benfleet 15 ?
mikemoreton

No, The Ultra.

22 miles

Take you to the middle of nowhere and say to you 'see you back in Rayleigh' with a wicked smile on their face

Well, something like that

Now that peeps have stopped making excuses about not marshalling because they had family commitments, washing the cat or framing their Benfleet 15 2007 race number and the overall points are out, does anyone know if the times and individual positions are going to be available?  Nothing on the EET site yet.
mikey

What about the overall positions

Did we hang onto 2nd spot ?

Think we must have .......

But finishing third in the last leg must have made it a bit tight
Karl C

Nope, I have chased Ian for the individual results, and he is working on them.

As soon as I know, you will know.

And some of us don't need to make excuses about not marshalling - our previous track record holds us in good stead to miss the odd one or two every five years or so.

Sounds a bit revolting MM1.  That fur goes everywhere, rolls in fox poo, gets covered in mud, catches untold bits of shrub bush and weed, frequently stinks, gets wet and smelly whilst marshalling, gets hosed off and then drops all over the bloomin house.  Thankfully we have wood floors otherwise we'd have black carpets.  Convinced one set of friends refuse to come to ours for dinner due to assumed amounts of fur all over house.

Have a dyson animal, gets used every other day and fills up weekly!

Plus I cant knit!

Is this online ? Can't find it in my quick search of the Echo sport stories.

What about the individual results too....?
debbie g

Thanks Lee (and Ian J).  I was pleased with the article Friday and was busy trying to make sure all the ladies were contacted that day to buy it!

The Echo cut my report a bit but it was worth it as they got Karl's Juniors piece in as well virtually uncut I think, so terrific PR all around for Benfleet.

Nice pic of the ladies and thanks again to the ladies for doing so well and enabling me to get such great publicity for the club even though we were runners up.  You were all brilliant  cheers  cheers

They were together when they got to me (at half way, two thirds, who knows, I'm still none the wiser !). Pretty awesome.
