As the countryside trees begin to turn their leaf colour towards an autumn hue, the first Essex Network QuadKids event proved that for some summer has only begun. Under a clear blue sky this first QuadKids event in conjunction with the newly created Network was a screaming & cheering success.
The first ever Essex Network Quadkids Club event was held on Tuesday, hosted by Basildon AC. The track at Gloucester Park was used as the base for this inaugural event, and over 80 children from Basildon AC, Benfleet Running Club, and East Essex Triathlon Club.
QuadKids is a new and exciting sporting concept designed to give more children the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of athletics and also to help identify the stars of tomorrow.
England Athletics has selected QuadKids to be part of a national competition framework.
QuadKids is a team based competition where each child does four events (sprint, run, long jump and a throw) and is primarily targeted at young athletes from the age of 7-13. Specifically designed to be inclusive, competitive, quick, fun and simple to run, QuadKids can operate in both schools and clubs, giving more children a sporting opportunity.
Zena Shean, member of the East Essex Tri Club coaching team, said “it was a fantastic event and a great opportunity for the club's triathletes to try something different and compete against other kids they would not normally see at events. The event gives kids a taste of competition in a safe and friendly environment and gives them goal to help them improve their strength and fitness.”
The event saw children, aged from 7 – 13 years old running 75m, throwing a Vortex Howler, running 600m, and competing in the long jump. Children gain points, as per their times/distances and their total points is then used to grade the children. All children receive a certificate, with their points tally, and medals were awarded to the overall Boy and Girl champions.
Karl Cadman, Junior Club Coordinator and Coach at Benfleet Running said “Inter-Club competitions are something we have all been discussing for many months, and the Quadkids events have brought all these children together for the first time. All the children had a lot of fun, and really competed in all the events. This is the first event since the formation of the Essex Athletic Network, and it is hopefully the catalyst we need to get these type of events rolling forward with other clubs.”
Ben Pochee, Quadkids Marketing & London Regional Co-ordinator:
“With over 100 children entered for the first event and receiving their first ever QuadKids score, the atmosphere was tangibly positive with children and parents alike excited by seeing August out with an athletic bang. Huge thanks to Karl Cadman of Benfleet, Wendy Tydeman of Basildon AC and Zena Shean of East Essex Tri for helping get the event off the ground and making such a positive platform to build upon for the future. Massive hearty thanks also to all the helpers on the day, without of which such a great event could not have happened. “
Please find initial results that have been uploaded to the QuadKids website, as you will see it is very readable and now the results also rank each child by individual event as well as score across all four.
Thank you so much Karl and team for involving my children in this fab event. They came home totally buzzing, and have really enjoyed finding their names on the results page!
Don't know if this will work but here is a link to some photos Jon took. He got some good videos too but I need a few hours spare to upload them!
