Graham, it's not a stupid question as it is a handicap aswell.
Ian will seed everyone, and then it is up to you to try and beat the people seeded near to you in the club listings.
Prizes are then for the most improved, amongst other prizes.
(Ian can explain better) |

As I have a whole chapter devoted to the Club Championships in the Yearbook I am reasonably well qualified to explain how it works Graham. The first Benfleet lady to finish is the Ladies Club Champion and the first Benfleet man to finish is the Mens Club Champion. This distinction is important as in 2007 Stacey was the 1st Benfleet runner to cross the line so although she was in reality Club Champion (as well as Ladies Champion) in recognition of the efforts of Dessie who came 2nd he got the Mens Champion trophy. Trophies are also awarded to 1st 35 vet, 45 vet, 55 vet (for ladies) and 1st 40, 50 and 60 vet for the men.
The handicapping or more precisely the seeding system which is decided by Ian is used to calculate the winning team. It is comprised of 4 team members who score on the number of places they finish above or below their seeding, i.e. they will have either plus or minus points. The winning team is the one with the highest team total of places finished above their seedings. The 4 team members are made of the 1st and last seedings and the 2 in the middle then you work outwards from the middle and inwards from the ends to make up the teams. The team members are never disclosed on the day. You can find out your seeding though. Men and women are seeded together not separately.
Although the only trophy in the seeding system is the team prize the seedings have the effect of making runners target those above them to try to beat them. Highly competitive!!
And needless to say poor Ian always gets plenty of grief for where he seeds people! But he has broad shoulders! Having said that I remember one year he got the 1st 9 seedings spot on!
So all to play for in the vets Graham! |

Anybody miss getting their entry in as I have a spare number, I was entered by Clive and entered online as I thought I missed the club deadline.
Place has now gone to a good home, the fast Mr Jordan will be chased by the slower real Mr Jordan, just to confuse everybody _________________ Whad'ya mean "Run fat boy, run"? I AM running! |

Great Pictures Karl.
Thanks for everyone cheering us on today. Thought it was quite good today (except for the usual crush over the first 2k - I have never overtaken so many "sub 40" racers in my life!)Good weather & good crowd.
Well done all. _________________ The Reason I run?..........

Top pics Karl .. Couple of classics in there for the caption competion haha
Well done all who ran and thanks to everyone for your support.
Really over the moon with my result today as I'd only hoped to trim a few seconds of last years time for the sake of a cheeky pb
As it ended up it was well over 2 mins to finish in 40:32 .. that'll do for me! |

Well done to everyone today. My throat was hoarse from shouting encouragement to the 80+ runners today and Louisa and I were priding ourselves on being able to shout out so many names! One or two actually looked surprised that I knew who they were!
I was lucky enough to see the Champs battle Steff as the lads went around the corner off the seafront heading towards the park Jez who was stuck to Graham's shoulder like glue made his move. It was sort of like a ferrari moving up a gear, he just accelerated. It is amazing what that sort of competitiveness can do! Love it! Bit gutted for Graham though as he misses out on being a Club Champ in the Yearbook - Jez now has the honour of having done it twice Brilliant Jez well done.
Ladies cleaned up as usual, Charlotte 3rd lady, Gail 2nd over 35 vet, Julia 1st over 45 vet, Benfleet 1st ladies team. Gail was 5th, Julia 8th, Vanessa 11th Catherine 12th, Lucy 13th.
Boys were 4th team too so nearly podium |

Was a great day. Superb finish from jez. Feel like I shoud be a bit disappointed but I'm not all, Jez always brings out the best in me, We psuhed other to PB's and he helped me beat Faye for a change. If I had to pick someone to lose to it would be him, or a fit Meady or Toddy - someone I looked up to when I joined and probably still do a bit. Or maybe I was just brought up to respect my elders!
Well done to all the girls, Charlotte especially.
The support was great, from spectators and other runners as me & Jez ground it out. Helped spur me on no-end.
Bring on the X country season. |

Goodness only knows how they got the race times 10 seconds out - the chip time was also the time on the clock when I crossed the line - I know it was the same for a couple of others.
What can I say apart from thank you for the great support around the course. It was lovely to hear Benfleet shouts along the seafront and as far as Chalkwell - it certainly helped in the toughest sections of the race.
Great performaces in particular from Jez and Graham, young Matthew in his debut outing. Also nice to see Toddy and Steff coming back to solid form, and Nick Rankin who I saw cross the line in 38.18 or so - that must be a minute off his PB! I was slightly underwhelmed with own performance today. Although I battled hard for position throughout the race and gained 3 places in a burn-up inside the stadium, the legs did not quite have it today.
What is evident is that we have a very strong team developing. In addition to the top 3, Toddy and Steff are coming back to fitness, and Mike Briggs will surely be back where he belongs within a month or so. Other people are also improving all the time. Bring on the Cross Countries! |

Well what a day, really enjoyed the race.A big thank you to all those who cheered us on along the route, the support was fantastic. With everyone running so well at the moment, I had thought that the battle for the club championship would need a PB to win.My pb for a 10km was from 2003 so I wasnt holding my breath.Graham and I pretty much raced shoulder to shoulder for the majority of the race, with young Mat hot on our heels. As Graham has already said, we helped to push each other along and managed to run a negative split.I was lucky enough to be able to outsprint him at the end,I am sure that there will be plenty more battles this winter as all those around me seem to be improving at a rapid rate....A good bit of healthy competition should help all of us run as well as we can.Seeing the results today I managed a 6 second PB so it just goes to show how hard Graham was pushing me that I managed to break a 6 year old PB!Nice one Mr B!
Well done to the ladies, some terrific performances!
Debs, not so sure about the Ferrari quote, felt more like I was in a stolen motor with the Rozzers chasing me .....I didnt dare look back!! _________________ Jez

LOL Jez like your analogy better! Come to think of it I had been chatting to Gary at the race in his official capacity just as you and Graham approached my supporters position - he might have enjoyed giving chase - in motorised transport of course as that stolen motor of yours was going quite a pace!
Yes I did spot the PB Jez! Yearbook updated already
Oh and Keiron don't forget Graham Crocket in your list of speedy men. PB for him I believe and under 38 minutes. He and Steff were having quite a tussle too. I sometimes wonder how I hang onto him, Colin and Gail on Monday night training, it's a good job they run with me for my company not my speed!
Yes the cross countries should be very interesting |

I noticed Graham Crocket's time as soon as I had hit the 'submit' button. That man also had a very fine race.
The scoring positions in the X-Countries should be very hotly contested - it could be any 7 from about 15! |

Brilliant runs by all the ladies too!

I’ve just been looking at the pdf results …
Doing a quick search for “Benfleet” we had 106 runners out on Sunday !!!
What a fantastic achievement
I suspect there would have been a few runners who didn’t enter under the Benfleet name.
So could end up with even more than this ...
Well done everyone |

| Well done everyone. I was cheering you all on from around the 4 and 6 km mark. Got out shouted my some Southend AC supporters but gave it a go! First race I've ever watched and must admit to being very jealous of all you running. Lots of Benfleet vests which looked really good. Well done all! |
