MERIT TABLE 2008
There are 5 merit table distances that you can gain points, these are 5k, 10k, 5 miles, 10 miles, half-marathon, and can be any AAA's certified race over any combination of these distances to gain points.
If it's not a local race just provide a results sheet as proof of your time and we will work out your points.
MERIT TABLE POINTS are based on the percentage (%) you run of your current table PB (personal best)
Intermediate results will be published here when available.

Karl, I know that I won the merit table last year but is it a new rule that you only count half of the races that the previous winner runs in. You seem to have missed off my Brands Hatch 10K run.
I have also noted that the scores do not coincide with the explanation on how to work out the points gained. It seems that you have forgotten to divide the scores by 5 before adding the bonus 5 points for achieving a PB. Is this intentional or a cunning plan to keep everyone guessing so that you can make sure that someone from Rayleigh wins this year? |

Ahh, you have seen through my cunning plan already !
Don't know why I missed your BH10k - call it first night nerves.
I will correct shortly. |

Also,
We just don't divide this result by 5 as previous
For example if you ran 95% of your PB last year you would have received 19 points
Where as this year you would receive 95 points
To keep the bonus in line for a PB as we're increased the main point by a factor of 5, we're also increased the bonus for a PB by a factor of 5
So where as last year you would have received a Bonus of 1 point for a PB ... You now get 5 points
This also makes the PB points clearer to understand
If this year you ran 6% quicker than your PB You will receive 106 Points + 5 Bonus Points = 111 Points
Where as last year you would have received ....... 21.2 Points for a 6% PB + 1 Bonus Point = 22.2 Points |

A small matter of no biscuits being given to the Merit Table organiser !! |

Karl,
Just had look at the merit table results for the Nicola 5 and I'm down as finishing 25:18 instead of 35:18.
As much as I appreciate the extra 10 mins PB is it gonna bugger up the numbers?
... or should I have just kept quiet and handed over the bung / hobnobs next club night!
regards

Karl, think you might have taken Deb Smith's half marathon time from last year and compared it with her Nicola's 5 time as I don't think she's ever run a 98 minute 5 miler !! Also, Mark's time from last year of 41.38 I believe is probably his 10 km time which I'm sure he'll be able to either comfirm or deny.
I'll take the abuse for losing them points later :argue: |

nope, don't worry guys all updated (and you Nicola 5 PB Mike!) so you can rest easy that you are not being beaten by a girl just yet.
A few "beginners errors" and steep "learning curve" being climbed on this - so bear with me.
Oh, and please let me know of any queries.

Keep up the good work Karl- its working for me!
However, my strategy of bagging a few races early on is about to falter (just like my marathon strategy) as other benfleet runners turn on the style I will be reeled in!
I've got to shake Pammie off my tail as she appears to be turning in some impressive performances.
My long term plan is to build stamina then apply the 'speed' element for the summer series of 5m, 10K and 10 mile races.
I have to be honest though I am not sure these longer runs are working for me as I seem to be getting heavier and slower. Training is a struggle as I don't appear to be recovering too quickly. There are some great coaches at the club but I feel that I may need a team consisting of dietician, nutritionist, physio, psychologist and a motivational positive thinking guru. Well I suppose there is Lee Olney. |

I too have started the year off with a MT PB
Trouble is ……….
Don’t think I can be asked to race another 5 times this year !!!!
Best of luck Steve with your MT challenge …
Here’s hoping it’s better than your attempt on the Bunkhouse Trophy

Karl,
We seem to have two topics for the merit table, an older one (CLUB MERIT TABLE) and this one, could the two be merged into one?.
Also the merit table doesnt appear to include my Baddow 10 PB, could be as I never told you i got a pb i guess
My old time was 1:11:57 and my new time is 1:06:59
Cheers |

Steve, I would hope this title MERIT TABLE 2008 would ensure everyone came here, as opposed to the older thread. But, I hear what you say and I might just delete the other one.
| Quote: | | My old time was 1:11:57 and my new time is 1:06:59 |
If you look at the pdf results for the Baddow 10 you will see your merit Table PB in brackets (71:57) which is in minutes (ie. 1:11:57) and your race time was 66:59 (1:06:59) which is why you got 107.41 points plus another 5 points for beating your PB = 112.41.
Hope this makes sense. |

What I meant is the Current Merit Table Standings only has one score for me and not two, if you scroll down im down the list with only one score which was updated on the 5th of this month.
I'll try to explain it abit better later on when i see you, i've got those pics of the Southend half for you too
Thanks

I thought the merit table belonged to me this year? Looks like I didnt see sneaky little dear pop along.
Just got my entry for this Friday nights 5 miler in Chelmsford.....It says undulating. Arrrrgggghhh.... Hills
Although the last bit is downhill to the pub, might be able to pull a 6 minute mile for that last bit.......... I wish. 9 minute one would be more than I could hope. Here goes. |

Karl
Thanks for adding the Tilty 5. This has put me back on top of the table.
I have noted the big guns with high scores creeping up the table. I have enough weight to keep them down. Is their a performance guide that relates weight loss to improvement in performance? This might be the insentive I need to shed the liquid pounds.
Glad to see the Springfield Friday 5 will be a MT race. |

I'm going to try and not to leave it till boxing day this year to get my last PB, as I dont want to be in that position again |

Who mentioned chip time? yum..mmm
I did the Bluewater 10K this morning. My gun time was 54mins++ so I guess my chip time must be better. A PB?
I think I did a better time in the Springfield Friday 5. It was quicker to run 5 miles than collect your burger at the end. Even worse was the queue for the bar! |

Great stuff Bob, looks like its going to be between you and Pammie to be the first to record 6 PB's this year.
As for the q for the bar Friday night, I think you and Lorri scored a PB there. Sounds like some were recording times as slow as 8mins per beer, you must have been down to 5 minute beering. Which I have to say was pretty impressive stuff, considering the crowded start at the bar. If it had have been chip timed I think you could have broken 4 minute beering, which is Legendary.
I think if we go next year we could skip the inconvenient 5 mile run and just go for the Bar run, could be a win for Benfleet there. If you fancy going for the team bar run let me know! You, me and MM2. Its got to be a first (or should that be a Thirst) for Benfleet.
Cheers

| My chip time at the Bluewater 10K is 53:45, which is equal to my PB at the Felsted 10K last year. Does it count if you equal your PB or do you have to beat it? It surely is a PB by definition! |

Bob
If my memory serves me right ….
( Which it does as I set up the scoring system )
If you equal your PB you get 100 points + the 5 PB bonus Points
Don't quote me on this but think that's 105 points coming your way
Many are the times over the years that the MT title has been won or lost by hitting or missing a PB by just one second |

Gun Time vs Chip Time
As far as MT tradition goes, it’s the official time that counts ( not your own watch time ).
As both Gun & Chip times are official times
Think that where available the Chip time can be used.
Mind you the MT is also traditionally a non-democratic competition
So at the end of the day its down to Karl as MT administrator to make a ruling.
