Is running safe tonight ?
Some pretty icy roads and pavements out there after dark.
I would do it, despite having a really wheezy chest and irritating cough, it's not just because it's ballbreaker.....! |

Yeah - posted my slowest ever run home from work last night because of all the ice, and I had nice big grippy Innov-8 trail shoes. Then I was even slower coming back in this morning. Hope it was the ice, either that or age has finally caught up with me.
Still, it looks quite bright out - reckon it might thaw a bit today. |

| Doesn't sound too promising really, don't fancy stacking it on a downhill stretch, might do my own little effort session on the flat, or might just stay indoors and eat pies.... |

Clearly tonights club session is going to be tricky given the icy conditions but I think for now we'll aim to still do the Ballbreaker but if anyone who lives on part of the course can tell me if here's any really bad stretches then we'll miss that part out.
Also if there's anyone living near the club that has some roads near them that are clear them let me know as we can use them as a place to do some efforts if we have to abort the Ballbreaker.
Without wanting to put anyone of coming to club, if you have use of a treadmill in a gym then that would be an excellent alternative for tonight as the cold snap hopefully wont have got indoors just yet !
JBD - eating pies doesn't count as training........and your coach won't be happy either :stop: |

My man in Benfleet tells me the roads and pavements are very icy so we may need an alternative place to run, suggestions on a postcard, or preferably to me at club please |

Don't know whether anyone went running tonight, I just looked at the icy pavements as I drove home in Thundersley and decided to stay indoors, still coughing like a good un....anyone else got this persistent dry cough and feel like they've got a layer of dust in their lungs ? Any good remedies, I'm getting frustrated with it now.
Anyway, no pies consumed, trust ok coach.... |

It really wasn't that bad! Not exactly ideal for efforts so steady run was swapped to today - kents hill was fine so could've done hill sprints up that if people wanted a session....
It seems like its going to be like that until the end of the week so perhaps the treadmill is the best option if you have access to one and want to run! |

Coach and myself ran along Canvey Sea wall last night, was perfect, crunchy snow under foot and full moon light the ground perfectly.
So when the roads and pavements are ever like they are at the moment I recommend doing a nice little off road run like that |

Sounds very...erm...romantic..... :cherry:
I'm kicking myself now, should have gone out, and as a punishment I'm going to run an easy 6 tonight and a bit of treadmill on Thursday (can't get down club) and another 10 on sunday (having played tennis indoors on saturday and with tennis sunday afternoon if it thaws).
Etc excuses excuses etc....... |

I should think so too Steve - penance for wimping out is certainly required! Stace is right it wasn't that bad on the roads that we kept to.
My evening was far more romantic than Steve's though - ice skating at Tarpots with Ernie! Nice slippery section there. After gingerly plodding the 1st mile Ernie persuaded me that running at 7:30's was a far better idea and flying back down Brook Road at sub 7:15 pace on the sheet ice was really very good fun
Bet you're sorry you missed it now. |

Hmm....seems like i did well to miss it, that Ernie is a bad influence !
Well, I done my punishment easy 6 miler and am now coughing my guts up, I'm definitely not right at the moment....
Pavements nicely thawed now though, hurrah..... |

| I also had the fortune to brave the Sea Wall with 4 other hardy souls - didn't see a single passer-by on the entire stretch. That must have told us something about the conditions. It was much less slippy than on the roads although this was negated by the distinct lack of vision in the darkness which meant stumbling every other stride. I had no idea of bearings or distances covered - excellent fun! |

Hmm Steve (H) I think Ernie's sanity has been called into question before which begs the question why do I enjoy running with him so often?
And Steve (D) I should point out that Ernie only runs with me when he's running easy (a bit like the occasions when you run with me - quite proud of my status of being the fast runners choice for a running bud on an easy run!).
Keiron can I ask - are you the same Keiron McGill who ran a x country a few years ago and finished 2nd, running I think for Castle Point? If so how come we don't see you at any x countries?
As Graham keeps insisting I should be running them I'm sure I could get him onto your case too... |

I have started to add GARMIN course exports into the diary to run alongside the MapmyRun routes Mikey has done.
Is this helpful, or do people download them direct...let me know ??? |

Debbie ! you don't do yourself justice - "quite proud of my status of being the fast runners choice for a running bud on an easy run!)."
3hrs 18mins Marathon time last year Debbie makes you a fast enough Runner in my book..... thats only 2 mins slower than myself ! |

Debbie,
This would have been around 9-10 years ago when I was competing in the Essex Schools, I think it was the U20's. How on earth did you find this out?
The only reason I haven't done this season's X-Country is that I have been injured since October and only just come back to the training sessions. I was really looking forward to the whole season when running well in September. |

Ah ha Keiron my sources are infinite! I have vast records of past results passed onto me by Clive to help in compiling our club anniversary yearbook I'm working on and being the sad individual I am I love ploughing through the old results - amazing who I've spotted. I saw your name in a road race too think it was Southend 10k running for a club miles away from Essex like Portsmouth or something - student times perhaps?
I'll dig out the results I saw over the weekend as my brain is whizzing with all the stats I've seen, so I can check what I've got.
I might add I've spotted Dessie's name in a few races before he joined Benfleet too!
And you have a good excuse for not running the x-countries then Keiron - hope you make them next year though |

Still thinking about that Essex 20...

That is correct, I ran for Portsmouth Joggers in the early 2000's while a student there. It would be good to run as fast as in that race!
It sounds like there will be no stone unturned in this yearbook! |

Good on you Keiron. Debs was giving me the inside track on your top results, looking forward to seeing you on the start lines next season and showing me a clean pair of heels!!
Mind I have to ask - what the hell were you doing running at Uni? |

Hey Lee I might surprise you - and I generally run bloody well the next day rocket fuelled with alcohol ! Thinking of incorporating it in my marathon training the night before every long run...
Oh sorry I missed you on Wednesday, I was only told you popped in hours afterwards! Hope the dentist was kind! |

Okay Keiron found you! Dec 1997 at our race at Hadleigh Keiron Magill (as it's spelt on the results) won the race (apologies for saying 2nd) running for Castle Point. Not an Essex Schools race a pukha x country League race in what was known in those days as the Todays Runner League, the forerunner of our current South Essex X country League, which from my vast source of info would have made you 17 yrs old. I take it that was you and there isn't someone else masquerading under your name (if it had been spelt correctly!)?
Scary isn't it? I said the same thing to Tony Mead - that I knew more about him than he did! And his memory's going anyway! Just kidding Tony!
And if it was you at that race in Hadleigh you should remember Tony he was there running too!
And Mike I now know why I haven't seen you in any 10 year old + results - you weren't running and were too busy in the pub like the rest of us! |

I would just like to say that today's training run was the most sociable solo run I have ever done! It was briiliant to see a stream of Benfleet runners along Marine Parade starting with Vic's group, then Mikey's, Karl's, all waving then Bobby on her own who stopped to chat to me, then John Crisp, then along Tattersall Gardens Ian Jordan! Along London Road I heard a toot of a horn and it was Andy! To cap it off I heard a cheery "morning Debbie" and it was Sharon's fella Graham on his bike in Thundersley
Made up for one of my slowest Sunday runs in 12 months! Trust me guys sometimes you have to give into tiredness and take it easy and enjoy yourself - and that's from someone who always tries to push herself in training.
Besides which Coach will be happy now as he's always trying to get me to slow down on a Sunday!
Hope you all had great runs and thanks for the cheery smiling waves |
