This is the best I can do on these. Clive gave me old Times newspapers with results in and a list he had of line to line times. Where I have been able to identify official times i.e. clock times those are the ones shown accurately with seconds. Sorry no chip timing in those days!
Sarah if you have a more accurate time let me know.

Are you sure it was 6:18? Clive has some results written out in his handwriting which shows your line to line time in 1994 as 5:18 and a PB for you. On scouring the results in the Times newspaper I have found a clock time for C Hopkins as 5:21:55 and I wonder if this might be you running as Clive?
I know it wasn't Clive himself.
I don't think this was the year you did 6:18 as I can't see you there or any other Benfleet club member's name I recognise in that time or any time after that and I went right down to the end of the results - unless you ran in another non-Benfleet name?
And Clive is usually right...so my money is on the 5:21 time!

Debs,
Are you posting official times for pre chip runs or actual times recorded on personal watch? My personal time for 1994 was 3.29.23. |

| Vic I am putting official times down as much as possible as those are the ones I can verify from the old Times newspapers. If anyone has a watch time I am happy to include that as well. The times in 1994 are a bit of a mixture as I was able to identify most official times from the newspaper but some are not official times but taken from a list Clive had where some had question marks by the times. I am trying to piece together the missing ones. Any help is appreciated Vic. |

Debbie if you are taking watch times my last Marathon was 2:17... _________________ 'sometimes I am running so fast it appears that rocks and trees are standing still......' Deb, why ask me for a more accurate time and then question it?
There is no way on the planet that my first marathon was under 6 hours, they were clearing up the water stations as I crawled past. It was my first road marathon and is as clear as day to me. I'll happily claim 5.18 if you wish.
I ran with Antony Baker and we finished together, so not sure if you can find him on the results. |

Apologies Sarah no offence intended, trust me I need all the help I can get with these older results. The reason I queried it though was you said "try 6:18" so I thought you weren't sure and I wondered if you'd got the wrong year and I didn't want you selling yourself short. I haven't found your name yet but there are 566 results from 6 hours to the end so I'll have another crack at the weekend and if Tony's name is with yours too that'll help. Do you remember if you ran in your own name in this year?
What I also had was Clive's handwritten results I believe he used for the competition the club used to run for the nearest to guess the club's overall time for all runners added together. He'd recorded 3 official times for the 1st 3 Benfleet runners home including your Dad and the rest were line to line times. However I was able to find all official times from the newspaper up to and including Martin Thorpe but after that they are just Clive's adjusted start line times so they are not entirely accurate. I was expecting them to be within 3-5 minutes of official times though as the ones I found in the paper were generally within that band to allow for crossing the line. Mind you I see now that your time was changed by Clive on his list, he had you as 4:28 before that so it might well be wrong. Tony's time isn't shown on Clive's list at all.
I'll keep searching Sarah but if you do know if you ran in your own name for certain that'll be a great help.
